Looks like a snook, a big one at that!

It is a snook. I had my smartphone with me, as a rule I don't carry it for the simple reason night photos do not come out well with it, and the fellow who snapped the picture fumbled with the phone.

That was a pretty good sized slob, I don't weigh or measure them but if I was guessing I'd say probably around 40" and a little more than 20#. I caught this one at the inlet so there is a lot of current to contend with, landing it with a pier net is a touchy thing too. They give a pretty decent fight, had it been a tarpon or jack of the same size, I might still be fighting it........lol.

I really prefer to fish a tad lighter, but contending with a strong current and a jettie about 8' high, a heavier rod makes better sense. I was using a Star mh 10/20, 4000 stradic 20# braid, not to mention I'm not as young as I used to be.

Whatta beauty, congrats. Just by looking at the head and gill plate, I'd say easy 20. Maybe 23-25. There are two things that make fish stronger than what they really are, CURRENT and OLD AGE, hahaha.

People don't know what they're missing by not being able to catch Snook.

It all depends who is doing the reading. I posted the same info on my SW board and had response and emails, simply because those guys are snook fishermen..

@sofla, the surf around here isn't great yet, Hobe sound or Juno and north is where to be. There is a guy up there who post pics of 40" snook off the beach, this guy gets the biggest fish of any species, included some of the amazing bass. That guy is one great fisherman.

I may be putting my surf fishing on hold for a bit anyway. Spent the last two days down in Homestead working on the boat and checking everything out. Always nice when it fires right up after charging the batteries for a bit. I'm hoping to get it out on the water at some point in the next week. As much as I want to go out trolling, I think I'm going to watch the tides and park over one of the deeper reefs with a few blocks of chum hanging over the side. Much better for the kids to do that. Plus, I want some yellowtail to stick in the deep freezer. Hoping for a few kings or sails to show up also. Would be a trip to let one of my nine year old daughters tangle with a sail or two.
