pricebb Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Hello all, I purchased a Lew's Speed Spool a few weeks ago and am having problems with what I believe is the worm shaft (its the small metal bar running across the frame above and slightly to the front of the spool). Every now and then I'll notice that it has come loose and can slide back and forth slightly. I just pop it right back into place, not a huge problem. This isn't supposed to happen is it? Is it something I can fix or do I need to return it? Thanks Quote
pricebb Posted June 28, 2012 Author Posted June 28, 2012 Is the end threaded? Its not coming unscrewed, just popping out Edit: checked the diagram, neither end is threaded. Its either in or out, not tight/loose Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Trade it in for a Shimano. Quote
0119 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Sure a Shimano that'll get redsigned next year be obsolete and not be supported with spare parts the year after that. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Um...Shimano parts dont change. They are always available, and have withstood the test of time. I think you might be confused with the potential future of Lews. Shimanos redesign was just cosmetic. Internal parts are still the same, only difference is no knob bearings, but you really dont need them anyway. 11 bearings doesnt help if they are cheap bearings. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 All of the older speed spools had a screw on both side of that stabilizer bar holding it solid.... Now days they could have changed the design to have an E-clip on each side holding the stabilizer bar solidly. You would have to remove the side plates and check the frame to see for sure.... Good Luck & Tight Lines! Quote
0119 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Yeah right always available. That's why they offer no support for Curado Ds since the year the E came out. Cant even get parts for current C14s. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 You can get any parts you want for Shimanos. You have to know where to go. Only true Shimano anglers know the secrets. Or you could use the internet Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Go away. X2 My shimano reels have been my least reliable reels Iv owned wont pay full price for one again. At half price they are priced what they should be. Quote
0119 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Perhaps you should make yourself more familiar with the shimano website. Take a look at the long list of reels they no longer support. Very recent additions to there history are included, like certain models of their flagship model the Calais. You know the one that came with a lifetime warranty .............. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Trade it in for a Shimano. Here we go again, shimano, shimano shimano! Sheesh!!! Hootie Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Here we go again, shimano, shimano shimano! Sheesh!!! Hootie I dont have a clue what you are talking about. . Lol Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Hearing you attack Lew's then praise the almighty Shimano got old after the 3rd thread. You've succesfully turned a thread asking for help with a reel problem into a thread about parts availability and a brand war. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 I dont have a clue what you are talking about. . Lol Ya gotta love this guy. If Shimano made a car, he would be driving one. Hmmm, I drive a 2012 Shimano curado. Doesnt sound bad! Hootie Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 You might be onto something! I hope its going to be as reliable as Honda. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Next time get a Daiwa! Just kidding. Let's try to stick the original topic guys, and see if we can't help a guy out with his reel. I'm inclined to think that if something is really wrong, it's under warranty, and should be fixed or replaced by Lew's. Quote
mr.mallard Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 it happens with mine too and im not sure why... Quote
Super User tomustang Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 One would think that If lews is outselling shimano there would more info on this problem, a google search doesn't even provide any help. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Could be just one isolated occurrence. Problems like this are not usually reported unless there are multiple occurrences. Hootie Quote
Capt.Bob Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Don't worry pricebb, you got a great reel, if you can't see why it is giving you a problem, send it back and Lew's will make it right, in over a year know I have only heard good things from "EVERYONE THAT OWNS THEM"!! So it is not an everyday problem, and remember, the only "COMPLAINTS" I have heard from others about Lews reels, are "FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER OWNED ONE"!!! Think about it, that oughta tell you something about their expertise on the subject!!! And coming from a guy who owns mostly Shimanos, as hard as it is to believe, they have had problems with brand new reels just like all the rest! Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 i am soo sick of hearing about shimano, i am gonna throw my citicas away, well na, but there fans are turning me away, lol 1 Quote
pricebb Posted June 29, 2012 Author Posted June 29, 2012 Didn't mean to start a war here, but just as an update I took it back to the store tonight and exchanged it for the same model. We'll see how it holds up. The issue may not have affected how it fished, I was just afraid of something going terribly wrong while im trying to reel in a big fish Quote
