Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 27, 2012 Global Moderator Posted June 27, 2012 Went out to try a new boatramp on the Kansas River yesterday mainly with the goal of shooting some flying silver carp with my buddy. After a couple hours he had to leave because one of his kids got sick at school so I was on my own which makes driving the boat and shooting carp out of the question so I decided to do some fishing, turned out to be a great move. I had some carp in the boat so I was using them as cutbait. Both fish bottomed out my 50lb digital scale so not sure on the exact weight but they're both bigger than any flathead or blue I've ever caught before! Anyone want to take a guess on the weights of these bruisers? They were both CPR'd to hopefully grow bigger and visit me again another day. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 27, 2012 Super User Posted June 27, 2012 Real nice sized fish. Quote

Super User 00 mod Posted June 27, 2012 Super User Posted June 27, 2012 BIG! Thats all the weight you need! BIG Congrats! Jeff Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 27, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted June 27, 2012 Yeah I wish I had a way to measure them when I caught them but other than cutting some line and saving the length that way. I was in a hurry to get them back in the water because it was almost 100 degrees out and I didn't want to set them on the hot aluminum bottom of my boat. I didn't have a any help, a net, or any gloves so they were tough to land, I ended up trying to beach the flathead and she came unhooked right when I got her up to the rocks but thankfully she must have been as tired as I was because she just laid there for a second when I jumped on her and lip landed her, I couldn't even begin to get my hand around her tail it was so thick. I'm 6' tall and 215lbs if that helps to have something for a size reference. Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 SWEET lord, blue, Catfishing is my first strong hold and i hardly ever catch em like that, d**n i need to get off lake hickory id say the flattie is 40 some and the blue is a good 50-55, id bet that. Quote

buzzfrog Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 idk then, i have caught a few flatties up to 60 that were shorter than that, i forgot what you said about scale, you wasnt useing bass gear was ya, lol Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 the more i look at the flattie, it may be pushing 65-70, did you get the girth, or know your state record.. ours is 70 some.. so when i pulled my 59.8 out i was quivering.. though i was on a guded trip, so for my skills it dont count ;( Quote

I was using a 7' 6" St.Croix Classic Cat MH casting rod with a 400B Calcutta and 80lb Cajun Red Braid. the more i look at the flattie, it may be pushing 65-70, did you get the girth, or know your state record.. ours is 70 some.. so when i pulled my 59.8 out i was quivering.. though i was on a guded trip, so for my skills it dont count ;( I didn't have any way to measure the fish, all I had was a 22" board I use to measure bass and walleye. I could have cut lengths of line but it was over 100 degrees out and I didn't want to lay them on my aluminum bottomed boat to get the measurements. I wasn't worried about a state record, our state record is also the world record, 123 pounds from Elk City back in the mid 90's I think. Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 oh ok, didnt know yal held the world, record, lol yall grow em big, I was lucky to get a classic cat on ebay for 120.00, i was offered 350 at the beginning of the year, love those rods, well anyway that wouldve made my year let alone day.. 2 in the same day, i am still showing people pics of em... you lucky dog Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 29, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted June 29, 2012 Was this a public boat ramp? A guy told me he puts in up by the river market were you close to that? Sounds like he's putting in at Kaw Point, that's right were the Kaw dumps into the Missouri River. This was in Turner, the ramp is literally right under the Turner Diag bridge, you back between bridge pillars to put your boat in the water. It was a really nice ramp and there is good water upriver until you get to the island up there, then it gets a little hairy if you go all the way to the 435 dam but I didn't really have any major trouble in my boat. Right around the island seems to be a good spot for blues because it bottlenecks and you get some good current because of it. Quote

Yep, 10 second timer. It was all I could do to get the camera set up and get myself and the fish set up for the camera but I got both those pictures on my first try. It was too hot to keep them out of the water for long so with one good picture each I got them back in the water and they both kicked off to deeper water to get bigger and hopefully visit me again someday.
