Why is golf better?

They have a bigger national following, more stores, better advertising, more accessible magazines, their pros get paid much more, their pros are more known, they have their own tv channel which is almost everywhere.

Am I missing something? I hear more about how people fish with their kids than how their 18 hole game was, even less about defending golf as a sport or even how boring it is.

So where is the golf support? Why is it so much bigger than fishing? Is there a mentality of anyone can throw a zebco and be on fish compared to hitting a ball on a course?

First golf tournament 1860... First Bass fishing tournament 1955... Golf has almost 100 years on fishing tournament wise. It's easy to hold golf tourneys all over the country or world only being a week apart not so much with fishing. And then there is the international appeal of golf. Longer season so the sponsors get a longer exposure time Good topic and I love to see some more replies. I've been playing golf since I was about 5 had numerous junior accoplisments as well as adult money tourneys. Fishing I've only been in 3 years and fished 3 tournies so I am defianatley more knowledgeable on the golf side vs fishing but those are just some of my perspectives.

For me personally I found learning to bass fish much harder than learning to golf. I was/am very good at golf, it took some practice, but nothing like fishing has.

As for golfing in general, and I mean no offense to anyone. It seems like more of a rich people's game. I mean there are courses down here that are 300-400 dollars for a round of golf. People are fascinated by this kind of thing, or most anything that is costly. That's one of my takes on it.

Another would be as, Bass Ninja stated, its an international sport played all over the world. Whereas bass fishing us more localized.

Great reply, I know there's guys on here that play both sides of fence.

Yet they do have snow golfing. That's what they make the orange golf balls for. I've always wanted to see a PGA snow golf tournament. I think it would be hysterical to watch them chip that ball outta a snow bank.

I thought orange were for high visibility

Being that bass fishing is more US oriented, you would think since our other sports are more of a US market and global interest wouldn't be a factor, look at football and baseball. Barely anyone outside the states doesn't like American football, even in the UK it hasn't taken off like they expected.

1. You can't fall out of a boat playing golf.

2. In golf, unlike fishing, your wife or girlfriend can kiss your balls before a tournament for good luck. Not a good idea to kiss lures.

3. We don't have fishing clubs to the degree we have golf/country clubs.

4. Anyone can play golf. Only good looking and intelligent guys and gals can fish.

5. You don't have to get up at 3AM to drive two hours to play golf.

6, Real bass fishermen do not drink alcohol when they fish.

7. Real bass fishermen do not have to dress in pastels and white pants to fish.

8. In golf, you don't have to make a $25,000 investment in a boat. Just buy the clubs and balls.

9. Golfing people have money. Bass guys and gals are usually broke.

10. You don't have the Bait Monkey running after you in golf.

I like them both. Been fishing since I was about 5 and played golf from about age 8, as a participant I find neither activity boring, I've always fished a lot and played a lot of golf too.

In either activity the cost can be both moderate as well as expensive, that's a choice made upon one's own desire or economic background. I've played at muni's and been a club member too, I was always buying woods, new irons, always looking for the magic bullet, just like fishing............there is no magic, you can't buy a fish or buy a swing.

I've shore fished, rented boats and owned a few too. I had a 34' at a marina, with insurance, dockage and maintenance may have been on a par cost wise with a golf club. Made money on my golf membership equity but the boat lost money on a trade in. When I moved to an inland like traded in for a smaller boat, 29', but did my fishing from a rowboat........lol, which I got for free when I bought the house.

Can't say I see either one boring or favor one over the other.

Nothing is more relaxing to me than fishing.... Its a stress reliever without a doubt for me.. I will golf maybe once a year, but will go fishing any d**n chance i get :respect-059:

Its also easier to televise a golf tourney than fishing. Getting TV time means viewers so you get ad space.

Golf around here isn't a rich person sport, but it really depends on where you live. I find deals in our local newspaper to buy rounds half off (19 bucks instead of 38), and the most expensive course around is only 60 to play. I find it just as relaxing at fishing and its actually easier for me to do with a child because I am only gone for 3 hours instead of 8 hours on tournament days.

I would respond to #2 but this is a family forum.

Number 9 seems pretty accurate.

As for number 10, you have to contend with the golf monkey instead of the bait monkey.

I have spent way more money on golf clubs, golf balls, and other golf stuff then I have on fishing stuff. However once I found the right clubs and golf balls, I didn't spend near as much.

One is not better than the other.

Watching someone fish and someone golf can be extremely boring. And, I feel that is their only common thread. One is a game, one is a sport. Apple orange thing to me.

Golf is a great game to learn and play. Fishing is a great sport to learn and participate in.

I've fished and golfed since I was a kid.

Whenever I'm playing golf and it's a water hole I always wish I packed a rod in my bag.

The biggest difference between the two comes about when you compete in either at the club level. Copy and paste the following question using any internet search engine you wish to find the answer.

How Do I Sandbag My Bass Fishing Handicap?

Posted

The problem is you're catching fish like the one in your avi.

Catch a couple 5+ lbers and then we'll talk.

I love golf and fishing for different reasons. You can't compare the two.

So is driving Lamborghini's, blinged out fishing rods and reels, and expensive liquor.....not to mention country living..:D..

You are correct when talking about tournaments, but when talking about the two sports together, fishing is wayyyy older. Golf started in the mid 1400's and who the heck knows when the first fish was caught!

I enjoy them both. I think it's about the money. More people like to watch golf which translates into dollars. The fishing community is very, very small compared to golf. Not people who fish, but the business of fishing is dwarfed by the golf business. Almost every golf course has a golf pro promoting and teaching the sport.

On a scale of more older people with disposable incomes, I can see the ED pills and hair for men commercials sponsering golf.

The two words are synonymous, can't apple and orange it, both have competetion, form, technique, style, a right tool for the job deal.

I'm not going to comment back about this, it must've taken you a long time to figure out something to type so witty for no reason.

It is and I agree. Look at Dicks sporting goods, it started as a tackle shop and evolved into a cater to golf store with other sporting goods.

Nearest dedicated (not talking shacks) stores, Golf galazy is a mere 5 minutes away, closest fishing dedicated store is about an hour.

Promoting is odd enough, seems like everywhere I look it's like a cry to get people to fish. TakeMeFishing, charitys for getting kids to fish, pros urging others to get young people into fishing.

Look at where you are, a bass forum! Would you expect the biased to be towards golf or any other kind of fishing? Tokyo Tony is right, the activities are not comparable. I call fishing an activity, I have never considered it a sport and I never will, but for the sake of those that do, I'll call golf an activity as well.

Some call golf boring, and they are entitled to their opinion. I fish for a multitude of different species, I put bass fishing in the category of fun, passes the time in a relaxed way, I will probably always do it. But as far as getting exhilarated and pumped, it doesn't rank real high as one of the more exciting fish for me to catch.

Fishing is better than golf IMO

Now miniature golf is another story!

Not synonymous at all.

Golf is a game whose objective is to put a little ball in a hole. Like tiddly winks, could appeal to virtually anyone.

Fishing is a blood sport. Its original objective was to eat, and, for most part still is. Not surprising to me that

it appeals to few comparatively as entertainment. But...it gets old hunters like us up in the morning. :)
