I already used the search and couldnt find a whole lot. I know alot of guys like using a crankbait rod for spinnerbaits, but the I hear of people using f and xf actions. What to you guys prefer, and why?

I personally dont know anyone who uses a crank and spinnerbait on the same rod. Most use a Moderate action rod when fishing cranks because you get the parabolic bend ( the whole rod flexes) which allows you to play the fish easier and keep more constant pressure VS just the tip on say a F or XF rod. I look at the hooks on a bait more than the bait itself to tell me what action i need to use. The baits weight is what determines the power. For single hooks like Jigs, t rigs and spinnerbaits i only use a MH/F or XF. For lipless or shallow-mid cranks i use a M/Moderate and for deep cranks although i rarely fish them i use a MH/Moderate.

When i read this the first time it was like everything finally made sense. Thanks RW for breaking it down and making it easy to understand to us slow folks :fishing1:http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/35514-rods-power-and-action-%C2%A0defined/

I have used a Abu vendetta(vtc73-6) 7' 3" moderate action for spinnerbaits in the past. It was a bit stiff for deep cranks(what I bought it for), But a bit loose for a single hook bait. Missed a mess of fish until I switched to a fast action rod. You definetly need a stiffer tip to get the hooks in them.

I'm getting by with the vendetta with lipless cranks and swimbaits. Even then I wish it had a tick more tip to assist in hooksets with the swimbaits.

I actually have...and use....and like...the W&M Skeet Reese Worm/Spinnerbait rod. I wouldn't use it for worms, but it's just right (for me) for spinnerbaits. It also makes a decent rod for throwing Spooks.

All I know is that everyone has different ideas concerning what is and what ain't a decent spinnerbait rod. Years ago, I was multiple hundreds of dollars into the search for the perfect spinnerbait rod, then All Star came out with the Zell Rowland Spinnerbait rod. It is a 6'8" rod with just a little more tip than their worm rod. I bought one, then I bought a half a dozen more, and that's what I use for spinner baits. I'm glad I don't have to start that search again, because across the board decent rods are more expensive now. If I had to start over again in the spinner bait rod search, I'd go with the Loomis spinner bait rod/

i use 'em all. moderate action for slow-rolling or fishing a single-colorado at night to help them eat it better (e.g., deeper). extra-fast for burning double-willows in clear water since the fish may zoom in from longer distances and tend to slash it more than inhaling it so i want to get a quick hook into them. fast for pretty much every other situation because it gives a good combination of casting distance and accuracy and the fast tip makes it easy to twitch the blades or skirt.

In a pinch, I've also used it for lipless cranks and even squarebills on occasion. Not my first rod of choice for these.

Hi all, I up this topic for a question concerning spinnerbaits.

I read you guys say you use a MH rod for spinnerbait, what's te cast weight in oz of MH rod ? (in europe a mh rod is 1/4 - 1 oz, but i don't think its the same in the united states.)

and if you had to fish northern pike (little musky) (i'm from europe) with a spinnerbait, what cast weight would u use for youre rod ?

does a liplles crank (vibrations) rod has the same specifications as a spinnerbait rod ?

thanks ...

Most guys use a medium heavy/ fast action rod for 1/2 - 3/4 oz spinnerbaits. if you are fishing lighter lures.

medium power/ fast action is a better choice.

Most of my spinners are 3/8-1/2 so I use a 7' MH/F Mojo. I also use this for swim jigs, chatter baits and buzzbaits.

I fish mostly 1/2 and 3/4 oz. spinnerbaits and I prefer a heavy-powered, fast-action rod.

I have a mh-fast and a H-fast one for 3/8-1/2oz and another for 3/4-1oz

Moderate action crankbait rods work well throwing a spinnerbait, but if you want to hook and catch fish, then you want an X-fast action rod.

That's pretty much how I do it. 3/16,1/4 and sometimes 3/8's ounce baits on a medium power/fast action. 3/8's - 1 oz. on  MH/fast.

the thing is that here in europe for pike fishing we use big spinnerbaits like 40gr (1 1/2 oz, 1,5 oz)

and sometimes we use colorado leaves, those leaves crank more than willow leaves. we use leaves of size 1 till 9.

for that I ordered a 15 - 60 gr rod ( 1/2 - 2 oz)

best in a composite of glass and carbon, to absorb the vibrations, that way it's more comfortable.
