krisjack69 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 What is the best setup for carolina rig. What is the best sinker and what is the best beads to buy.Any help in this would be great. Quote
kikstand454 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 i use a 7'4 rod mh/fast and 20lb braid. i like to use glass beads and at least a 3/4oz sinker. then i typically tie on a 2-3 foot leader of flouro (12lb) or mono. to a 2 or 3/0 hook. u can get good glass beads for cheap in any crafts store or the craft department at walmart or wherever. i like green ones. i also fish a c-rig typically on off shore humps that have grass on them and sparse wood.. so i have found that i prefer the long cylindrical weights as opposed to bullet or egg weights. but thats a personal preference. any soft plastic bait can be c-rigged with success.... from little finess lures to big 10in worms. zoom trick worms in black have been working for me lately. Eternal Angler Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I just use a bullet weight with nice Mustad hook, then rig it up with a Kalins grub. Dynamite for Pike and bass. Quote
Hinkle2891 Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 i got my first setup for brass and glass from cabela's. they sell a little kit, complete with several sizes of brass weights, beads, and what they call "tickers," little brass discs that sit between 2 beads. i'll rig it with a pretty heave (3/4 ounce) weight, then a bed (i like red), the ticker, and another bead. then, you'll want a pretty long leader. a couple feet at least. hook size should match your bait, and for your first bait to use, use a zoom baby brush hawg. that bait has never let me down. work it by giving it a couple small sharp jerks to snap the beads and get the fish's attention, but when you're actually moving the bait slowly swing the rod to the side. the fish will pick it up subtly most the time. look for the line moving to the side, or slowly getting tighter or looser. sometimes they'll hit it on the way down, and you'll see the line sink, then stop, then sink again. reel up the slack, slam that hook in, and get ready for a fight. also, i use Yum garlic attractant. that stuff will cover skunk scent. good luck! hope this helps. if you need anymore help, shoot me a PM. Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 13, 2010 Super User Posted January 13, 2010 Every year I tell myself I'm going to carolina rig more. Then I don't. Last year I actually kept the carolina rig in the boat every trip. My current rig set up is a 7' Fenwick MH spinning rod ( rated 3/8 to 1 ounce). I put a US Reel Supercaster 230 with 30 pound fireline. It will throw a 3/4 ounce weight and 3' leader a long ways and it seems to be pretty sensitive dragging the lure back. I don't think I fished it for an hour total all last season, but I had it in the boat and that is progress for me. I don't know what it is about carolina rigs, but I just don't have much confidence in the technique. I know some BFL co-anglers who live and die with that rig. They've cashed more checks than I have. I'm going to resolve to try to use it more next year. Quote
A-Rob Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 my gear isn't ideal, but I am a poor student, but I can tell ya what I use b/c it works even though not ideal, it will let ya know what you could get away with. I use my MH 6'6" spinnerbait rod. Baitcasting reel, 6.3:1 14lbs test mono 12lbs test leader ball bearing swivel 2 steel eggs sinkers (size depends on conditions, and the steel sinkers clink pretty good instead of a bead) 3/0 hook Yum craw papi, 4" brush hog, hoola grub, 4 or 6" lizard (i fish smallies mainly) Quote
santacruz Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I saw a cool c-rig the other day on a fishing show lol, worked out good for them though. Was a c-rig with a shorter leader than ive seen. Was like a 15"-20" leader with a small paddle tail worm.Btw z-mam plastics work well for c-rig cause they float. krisjack69 Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 I bought this rod last year. Its a Quantum Tour Edition Pt Carolina Rig rod.I used it for just about anything.I need to get another reel but I can't afford one since times been rough for me lately.I lost my job as a truck driver last year and now I work part time at walmart. PTC706F The classic Carolina-rig rod with plenty of backbone for long sweeping hooksets. The fast tip also makes it and excellent rod for slow rolling deep spinnerbaits. Mark Stevenson, Lake Fork, Texas guide caught four fish over nine pounds while field-testing this rod. Quote
