jrsmith_80 Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 A buddy if mine and myself have a very small but deep farm pond that we can fish on and we know its got some huge LMB. The trouble that we are having is that its got a huge weed problem approx 3 inches below the surface of the water and we can't get bait through the weeds. Is there anything we can do to get rid of the weeds and keep them under control without hurting the fish habitat. Quote
MaineBassFishin Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Punch using heavy 1/2 oz- 1 1/2 oz weights or whatever it takes to get through the weeds Quote
Super User Marty Posted June 24, 2012 Super User Posted June 24, 2012 I'd check with your DNR or a person or company that knows pond management before doing weed control. Quote
psuangler91 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Don't get rid of the weeds! if it's a small pond that's probably the only cover those fish have! Just like MaineBASSfishin said just go in and get em with your heavy stuff! 1 Quote
logan9209 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I agree with MaineBassfishin. At the same time, though, there should be pockets which are areas that aren't as high as others or just isn't any weeds in those spots. You can work you lure through those pockets and slow down in them. Bass are in the weeds for three things oxygen, to stay cool, and to launch a surprise attack on bait fish or other foods. So they will come out of the weeds to get food. Just have to figure out what will make them do so. Quote
tyrius. Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 There pretty much isn't a way to kill the weeks and leave a good fishery. Instead of trying to figure out how to get the weeds out of the pond you need to figure out how to get the fish out of the weeds.. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 26, 2012 Super User Posted June 26, 2012 1. Drag Senkos, pink or white trick worms and frogs across the top of the grass. 2. Punch through the grass with a heavy sinker and a trick worm as bait. 3. Get a paddle and make a holes in the grass. Come back in an hour or so and drop bait into holes. 4. Throw a Manns -1 or a wake crankbait above the weeds. 5. Do what the guys suggest. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 27, 2012 Super User Posted June 27, 2012 JR, don't forget the buzzbait. Buzz that sucker over the tops of the grass. Could produce some good action. Try it with a trailer hook. If the trailer hook picks up too much grass remove it. Quote
Stone Cold Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I fished a heavy weeded area last weekend and was using a 1/8 bullet weight with a 3/0 worm hook and a 5 inch black Senko and was just ripping it through the weeds... The result 3 Bass and 12 Pickerel.... Quote
jrsmith_80 Posted June 27, 2012 Author Posted June 27, 2012 Thanks for the replies. Im hoping to fish this pond in the next week or two and hopefully have some better luck with you suggestions. Quote
jrsmith_80 Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 Myself and a buddy went and fished this farm pond Saturday evening and used the advice givin and here and this is what i caught,4lb LMB on a texas rigged, weightless brush hog. We lost 3 because they tangled us around trees but managed to have a good couple hrs of fishing. Quote

unionman Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 I would only throw two types of baits there. Frogs and a "Diamond Pegged" plastic worm. I fish a place around here with ALOT of veggies. I almost gave up on it untill I found "Diamond Pegs". Now I can rip my plastics through anything without any lure slippage. Plus my knot is now protected at all times. A little scent will lube the lure and allow it to slip through the weeds easier as well... I think tackle warehouse has them. They are a small, metal wire peg, bent in the shape of a diamond. They slide through your plastic and through the eye of they hook past the diamond shape and are locked in. You get five different sizes. Best addition to my plastics fishing since I started using EWG hooks. Ill never be without them in the weeds again. They also make your plastic last longer because its not slipping and ripping every other cast. Quote
MultiSpeciesFisherman Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Another good bit of advice would be to try using heavier braided line. Some guys in tournaments use up to 65 pound braid when fishing heavily weeded areas, but I think anything over 30 pounds is a bit of overkill. 30 pound braid with Texas rigged worm would be a killer set up for this type of cover. Mad Fisherman Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 How about you try calling your local fish and game department and ask if you can stock fish. If you could stock 3-6 grass carp, they wouldnt eat the whole weed lot, but more than enough so you could fish it. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 5, 2012 Super User Posted July 5, 2012 Rage Tail Shad would be KILLER! Quote
Super User senile1 Posted July 5, 2012 Super User Posted July 5, 2012 I assume you and your buddy are fishing this pond from the bank which can be tough when a pond is weedy. If there is open water beyond the weeds I would suggest leaving the weeds alone and using a small boat if one is available. Then you can fish the outer weed line, fish the holes, punch the mat, drag a weedless topwater over the top, or whatever method fits the situation. Those weeds are probably the prime habitat for the bass in that pond. Quote
