buzzbait4me Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 I have heard of a few people saying that you cant tie a palomar knot with fluorocarbon line. They say that it cuts itself. I just wanted to know is this true or can you tie a palomar with fluorocarbon. Thanks Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted June 24, 2012 Super User Posted June 24, 2012 I use to use the palomar knot. I've since switched to the san diego jam and have yet to have a break off. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted June 24, 2012 Super User Posted June 24, 2012 Ive always used the clinch knot for all my mono/fluoro knots. Never has failed. I dont retie either, unless I have damaged line. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 I also used the palomar and have since switched to a knot that I saw Shaw Grigsby demonstrate. He does not know what it is called, lol If anyone does know the name please feel free to tell me!lol Quote
BassinMD Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 I am pretty sure it is a double San Diego jam knot Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted June 24, 2012 Super User Posted June 24, 2012 A properly tied Palomar has yet to fail on me with any line type. When I rush it and don't tie it right on the other hand..... Bad things happen. Quote
BamaBassChaser Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 I haven't had any problems with the palomar and I use it for everything. Quote
james 14 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I use the palomar with no problems. You just have to make sure you wet it very well and don't tighten down the overhand knot you make before you wrap the loop over. If you tighten down the overhand knot before you tighten the entire knot down you create a lot more friction. At the end, when you tighten the entire knot down, you're basically just tightening the overhand at that point. If the knot is wet enough you should be able to pull the tag and the main line at the same time against the hook and the knot should cinch down with little to no resistance. Resistance = friction. I tested the San Diego Jam BTW and couldn't get it to beat a palomar. It was very bulky and hard to tie. It looks like a good knot in theory but I couldn't get it to work. The Fish-n-fool knot won the Knot Wars competition and is basically a Uni knot with the line wrapped twice through the hook eye rather than once. It ties pretty smoothly with FC. Quote
BFG79 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 i use the improved clinch knot and has yet to fail me Quote
greyleg33 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Grigsby is tying the San Diego Jam. The secret is instead of wrapping 4 or 5 times around the standing part, wrap only twice. The second secret is to double tie instead of single. The third secret is if it isn't pretty--do it again. The forth secret is for bank fisherman: don't use this knot. It is stronger than line test and you're likely to leave lots of line in the water if you get hung up. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 25, 2012 Super User Posted June 25, 2012 Ive always used the clinch knot for all my mono/fluoro knots. Never has failed. I dont retie either, unless I have damaged line. Without a doubt. I use both the ordinary and the improved too, especially with braid. Each and every mate and captains I go out with uses an ordinary clinch. For all of my freshwater and saltwater fishing, it's only those 2 knots. Just about any knot tied correctly is going to be ok. I wonder what kind of fish are on steroids that require those mega knots. When a knot fails, it isn't the knots fault, it's user error, or too tight a drag. Quote
