MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 I have a Johnny Morris bait casting reel in a 6:4:1 ratio, on a 7' MH BPS Nitro. What would be the best use for this combo? Thanks for the help! Quote
shaun_reid Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 You could do a lot of things with this setup as you have a reel with a very versatile gear ratio and a rod with a versatile power. The only thing you really couldn't do well is throw crank baits. You want reel with a slower line retrieve to do that. It can be done just not as easily. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 24, 2012 Author Posted June 24, 2012 How should I have my settings on the baitcaster.? I practice but I can still only cast maybe 40 ft, idk I don't judge distance well but it's not far. And can I use a stiffer line on a baitcaster? Quote
BASSHUNTER1961 Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Yes, you can use heavy line on you reel.. Here is how to adjust the settings. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 24, 2012 Super User Posted June 24, 2012 Just like shaun said, if you ask for advice on an all-around rod/reel combo, most of the answers would fit what you have. Baitcasting reels take a lot more practice to use well than a spinning reel. Two hands on the rod will help gain distance. As will loading the rod on the back swing. It is critical to be smooth on the reversal. One of the things I did when I first started with a B/C reel was over-tighten the spool tension to avoid backlashes. This really hurts distance. Especially when you add in lots of brakes. Keep the spool filled more than what the normal suggestion is, keep spool tension low, practice a lot, and distance will be there. However, setting up your reel this way causes more backlashes...for me anyway. I almost had to learn to cast again once I made these changes. However, it was worth the effort. I can cast as far underhand now as I was casting sidearm before. EDIT: I still have to keep my magnetic brakes a little higher than I would prefer, but time on the water will help me in being able to gradually lower my brakes. Or getting out to the park for a bit of practice. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 24, 2012 Author Posted June 24, 2012 That's what I did... You were a great help! Quote
