MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Im looking at getting some sun gear, i think i have decided on Simms sun gloves, but what about neck/head wear? I was looking at either the Simms Sun Gator, or Buff Angler Headwear. Reviews, suggestions? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted June 23, 2012 Super User Posted June 23, 2012 I recently purchased the buff version, been very happy with it. Quote
JamesD Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 I don't know what that stuff you're talking about is... And I'm not sure I want to. What ever happened to wearing a hat, and getting some sun? Are we really a world of men who need to wear protective gloves to keep out hands out of the heat of the sun? .... This disturbs me greatly. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 23, 2012 Author Posted June 23, 2012 I have the gloves for stripping line when im fly fishing, im tires of cuts and line burns. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted June 23, 2012 Super User Posted June 23, 2012 JamesD, after you see a friend go thru treatments for skin cancer or bury someone you will understand. I see in your profile you are young, as you gain experience in life you will learn to take care of yourself. Quote

I was looking at either the Simms Sun Gator, or Buff Angler Headwear. Reviews, suggestions? I just got the dr shade gloves, there great, definitely recommend them. I use a columbia hat, the columbia spf 30-50 shirts, and hoping to pick up a buff soon, ive only heard good things about them. I don't know what that stuff you're talking about is... As a leukemia survivor who loves to fish but cant be in the sun, im thankful for all these companies coming out with sun gear. ps, your post disturbs me greatly... Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 24, 2012 Author Posted June 24, 2012 Thanks for the info, i was looking at the Simms gloves because of the open palm, supposed to help with grip on the rod and reel. And the buff sounds great, I like all the options on how to wear it. And congratulations on fighting through the cancer, I'm glad you can still enjoy a great hobbie out in the wonderful outdoors:) Quote
Addicted to Smallies Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Can't say enough good about the Buff. Seems like just a simple little piece of cloth, but it's the best piece of fishing clothing I have purchased. Has certainly saved my neck and ears from sunburn this season, and it also helps keep those pesky no-see-'ums out of your ears and nose when they're swarming. Quote

As a leukemia survivor who loves to fish but cant be in the sun, im thankful for all these companies coming out with sun gear. ps, your post disturbs me greatly... I can completely understand the logic of a leukemia survivor when it comes to protecting one's self from the UV rays of the sun. Don't get your knickers in a twist.... I wear either a cabela's leather safari hat, or my DCU boonie hat, and a short-sleeve dickie's shirt 90% of the time when fishing. I DO try to keep myself out of the UV if at all possible. I am, on the other hand slightly disturbed by all the creature comforts of today's modern age. I grew up old-school, my father's a 65 year old prior service green beret. He's also a very cautious man. Growing up with him, I learned to 'weather the elements' so to speak. To do work, sometimes you have to be in the sun. Just a fact of life. The same could be said for fishing, shooting, hunting, or any other out door sport. I am not one to judge a man for protecting himself for fear of his life. You'll have to excuse my point of view, As a welder, I cannot stand wearing long sleeve shirts or gauntlets while working. It's just too much. Sure, I get a little 'farmer's tan' but it comes with the territory so to speak. I still feel we, as people have too many creature comforts. Granted they have a purpose for a percentage of people, it's just the other 75% or more that buy into it for god only knows what reason. Also... I can be a disturbing individual? Quote
Addicted to Smallies Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 James, I see your point. I was the same way for a long, long time. My dad was a "never wear a shirt when working outside" kind of guy growing up, and I always thought that real men accepted a little bit of sunburn every year as just being par for the course. But after seeing what my Dad's skin looked like at 70 years old, I realized I needed to take a little more precaution. I'm not a fan of worn leather, except on my recliner, my baseball glove and my old overnight bag. ;-) Ever notice how you can always tell a woman's "real" age by looking at her hands, no matter how much work she's done everywhere else? Well, guys are the same way. The gloves aren't a bad idea for us fair-skinned folks -- even without the cancer worries, I want to fight off the aging process as much as possible now that I'm in my mid 40's! Quote
VolFan Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Protecting yourself from skin cancer isn't a "creature comfort", it's quite literally a life saver. Skin cancer is one of the #1 cancers for males under 40 (throat/mouth being the other, take note if you dip/chew). You're young, and male, so you have much to learn but can't see it or don't believe it yet. Quote
thehooligan Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Whats even worse is before i had cancer i was the guy fishing with no shirt on, out working construction all day in the sun. Now atleast i have a chance to get out there and enjoy the outdoors even if i look like jack hanna on a safari adventure Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted June 25, 2012 Super User Posted June 25, 2012 James D, I agree with you 100%. You, my young friend, are QUITE disturbed. Ahh, the arrogance of youth! Hootie Quote
