WhiteRubi Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Hey guys. Pretty new here. I've been lurking and reading for a while. I've been fishing for about 30 years and have decided to up my game a little bit. I've been fishing with hand me down stuff for most of my fishing career. I recently purchased some new rods and am torn between reel models, ratios, and line choices. So, tell me your thoughts. and I'll tell you mine. Thanks for looking and any help you can offer Here is what I just got: All Shimano Crucial (new style) CRCX72MHA 7'2" MH Worm (mostly Texas rigged worms, jigs, and creatures up to 3/4 oz weights) CRS72MA 7'2" M Worm spinning (mostly finesse jigs and texas worms) CRCC76MA 7'6" M Crankbait (mostly small and medium sized crankbaits shallow to 12') CRCFX72MHA 7'2" MH Frog (zoom horny toads, etc on unweighted hooks) CRCSBX72MHA 7'2" MH Spinnerbait (mosylt spinnerbaits up to 1/2 oz) CRCX711HA 7'11" H Punching (bigger jigs and punching setups 1 oz or so) I have one Revo STX HS that I will be putting on my worm rod I'm thinking of going with all Abu Garcia Revo's (STX-HS for worm, frog, and punching. Winch for crankbait and STX or Premier for spinnerbait. Thinking of Pfleuger Supreme XT or Stradic CI4 on the spinning rod) Open to suggestions and also suggestions on lines for each. Also, which rod would you suggest for buzzbaits? PS looking for an excuse to buy an MGX hehe Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 I like a high speed reel for buzzbaits to get them up on plane and into the strike zone quickly. Since you seem to already like revos I'd stock up on the clearance models Winch, STX and Premier. I don't spend a lot on spinning reels and think the Pfluegers are a great bang for the buck. Especially the President on up. I don't see where the MGX has enough over the Premier to justify the price difference, but if it helps you out tell the wife i said you HAD TO HAVE ONE. Quote

Ima Bass Ninja Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 bottom contact lures/punching 7:1 spinnerbaits and lipless 6:1 deep crank 5:1 topwater 7:1 spinning shimano stradic ci4 2500 Jeff Good advice right there ..exact same thing I would say on the gear ratio/ technique Quote
WhiteRubi Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 Thanks for your help guys. I know there is a LOT of debate over the Shimano vs Abu reels. I handled the new Chronarchs, Curados and Core...not impressed. Seemed a little sloppy to me. That is why I think I really want the Abus. What about line choices? And which rod (of those listed) would be best used for buzzbaits? Again, thanks so much for your help. Quote
j.bruno Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Check out the new premier coming out this fall. Thats my next reel! Quote
WhiteRubi Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 Check out the new premier coming out this fall. Thats my next reel! Unfortunately, I JUST saw the 3rd Generation Revo line on ***. As if I wasn't already confused enough, now I have to decide if I can wait until "early fall". Quote
BassinMD Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Your spinnerbaits rod would e fine for buzzbaits. As fr line 8-10 flouro on your spinning, heavy braid for frog and flipping rods I like 12-15 lb flouro for cranks sometimes 10, and 17-25 flouro for your mh soft bait rod just what I would do and these guys got me on seaguar line and I probably won't ever change, and power pro braid IMO. And your my hero for goin all out on your rods man wih I had the dough Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted June 23, 2012 Super User Posted June 23, 2012 Keep it simple. 6lb yo-zuri hybird for spinning. 12lb yo-zuri hybrid for b/c. And then your choice of 15-20lb flouro or braid for jigs/flipping/punching. Always use KVD line and lure for all of the above! Jeff fyi breaking strength on those yo-zuri lines are: 6lb- 11.9lbs ; 12lb-19.5lbs Quote
