GoTakeANap Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Is there a difference in the fish finder you have on the dash of your boat and up front mounted to the floor? If so I would like to know. when i bought my boat it came with one up front but it doesnt work anymore. was wondering whats a good floor mount type fish finer to buy. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted June 20, 2012 Super User Posted June 20, 2012 They can be the same or different. It doesn't matter. I have Humminbird units, plus the basic Lowrance that came mounted in the console of my boat. I will not say the Humminbirds are better than the Lowrance or Garmin units. In the end, it all boils down to this. Get something you are comfortable using. Quote
RyneB Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 i have Humminbird 597s at the console and up front. You can use whatever you want. Like Rhino said, go with what your comfortable with. When i bought my boat last week the guy tried to talk me out of the 597s, but its a unit i trust and know. Quote
GoTakeANap Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 thanks for the replys. i didnt know if there were differences in the one you have on your dash and up front. also let me ask this question. im guessing they make a component piece to mount to the bottom of the trolling motor instead of the transducer you mount to the back of the boat? also do you have it on the bottom of the trolling motor? if not where is a good place to put it in the front of the boat? Yes, there will be a transducer that you will need to mount on your TM. You will most likely need to buy a bracket to mount the ducer, unless you can reuse your old one. What kind of finder did you have at the bow? It may be eaiser to stick with the same wiring used so you dont have to run any new wires. Quote
NBR Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I mounted many transducers right to the bottom of the TM with clamps. There are special transducers made for this purpose but I mounted both those intended for this and others made to be used with brackets that are made to mount the transducer off the TM shaft but didn't like it and returned to mounting right to the TM. It's been so long ago I can't remember why I didn't like the bracket mount. Quote

Super User Wayne P. Posted June 20, 2012 Super User Posted June 20, 2012 For the best installation on a trolling motor is to use a transducer that is designed for that purpose. Some adapt a transom transducer for the trolling motor and end up breaking off the attachment arm---quite common with the Lowrance/Eagle torpedo shaped transom transducer. I use the same unit model at the bow and console. I want the same information at both locations. Quote

All properly installed 2D transducers are pointed straight down. The distance it displays from the center of the sonar pulse is variable according to the depth. The shape of the sonar pulse is a somewhat inverted cone shape and gets larger as the depth increases. That means it can "see" 360 degrees around it at variable distances horizontally. A 20 degree cone pulse covers about 1/3 the depth. You can do the math to get the distance ahead it will show at a particular depth. Quote
