Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 19, 2012 Super User Posted June 19, 2012 Hey guys. FIrst post. Been doing some searching and am stoked with all the info. Still cant find my problem so I wanted to ask. I have a Quantum Iron IR300C that was given to me by my father so its got alot of sentimental value to me. I bought an Ugly stick 7 foot medium heavy rod at bass pro to replace the worn out rod that was on it. I am having all kinds of problems backlashing this combo with all weights of bait. I have to use a heavy spinner or deep crank with the magnetic braking set to #2 to even run this rig without a backlash. Problem is I am getting about 25 foot or less in a cast. I am running 14 pound Berkley Trilene Armor. To help with the question, I am really not a stranger to casting rods. I have 4 others and use them about 99% of the time. All are 14 pound to 12 pound medium 6 foot to 6.5 foot rods. I can run a light weight popper all the way up to a heavy spinner with them without any problems. Well I say none, but I do backlast the reel maybe once in a great while due to a snafu, but over all no issuses. I have been doing some searching and noticed alot of flipping rods look like this set up? Is that what I have? Thanks for any and all help Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 19, 2012 Super User Posted June 19, 2012 First of all the Quantum Iron IR300C sounds like the Iron ACS as the original Iron reels didn't have brakes, you simply adjusted the spool tension knob. So if you have the ACS adjusted to the 2nd position (it should have 3 positions total) you basically have 6 brakes on as there are a total of 9 brakes, 3 brakes on/off for every position. Try using the 1st position on the ACS and adjusting for lure weight with the spool tension knob and then make a cast but don't force it. I have 3 older Iron reels including the first ACS model and it casted really well but nothing under 1/4oz and if it was something that would kite like an old rogue it was tough but 3/8oz and 1/2oz worm weights or cranks would be no trouble. Thanks for the help. Ya its the ACS. It has 4 positions, 5 dots, 4 dots, 2 dots and free. Just tried running a 10" power worm with 1/4" weight and its still not really getting out there. By the first position are you meaning #2 or free? Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 19, 2012 Author Super User Posted June 19, 2012 Could be the 7' MH Ugly Stick. I feel like an idot, but the rod is actually 6'6" not 7 inch. I swore it was a 7". Quote

You want to use the very first setting after "Free" which is the 2 dots. Also make sure the spool tension knob is adjusted correctly. What kind of line is on it and how old? If the line has a ton of memory ( it looks like a slinky coming off the spool) it won't cast because it creates too much friction in the guides. Quote

Im using Berkley Armor 14 pound test. Line basically brand new. I have been to the lake twice and bought it less than a month ago. Quote
dave Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 My thought on the rod is that it is too heavy a power for the makeup of the rod to properly handle some lighter lures. Coupled with a reel that is not known for it's finer graces...the combination could be the culprit. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 20, 2012 Author Super User Posted June 20, 2012 Thanks for all the help. I took the reel apart and oiled it real good. Seems to be a bit smoother. I bought some 1/2 and 3/8 oz weights and some Yum heavy pumkin seed critters at bass pro this afternoon. I will hit the lake before I leave town tomorrow and see if that works some. Again thanks for all the help so far. I know the reel is not premo, but the reel was given to me by my father before he went to hospice and the rod was his all time favorite when I was a kid. It wont be my go to rig, but more just to use to remember dad. Quote
Bigbarge50 Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I have that reel and use it still......I think it is a quality reel..... casts very well for me. It is heavy..... but 1)- I think weight is not that big of as issue 2)- It is named "iron" of course it is heavy. I think if it had an updated brake system, it would be near equal with similar style reels...... the issue is everyone is obsessed with making a reel defy gravity it is so light..... so would be completely going against the market if it was out there now. The Med Heavy might be the problem. MH is not all built equal to say the least..... some seem like fishing with a telephone pole to me.......others have great tips I like. I am often using a medium when throwing a 3/8 jig..... which is too light for many, but again think it depends on the brand of pole and the make of it. Might be worth trying it on another pole. Quote
KevO Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I used to have that reel too the only way I could get a good cast with all the brakes off (free spool). As much as I hated that reel it did teach me to throw a bc in free spool and not get backlashes. Quote
BassinMD Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Lol my first baitcaster was a quantum iron with no brakes lol I still use it once in a while when I go pond fishing so weird not havin instant anti reverse Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 i was using new, good and fresh 14lb trilene xl on a baitcaster(not the same as yours) and it was backlash city, got one so bad one day that i finally said screw it and ended up taking all that line off. afterwards i put 17lb FC on it and havent had even close to the problems i had backlashing with the 14lb line... oh, and thats on a 6'6 MH rod, not an ugly stik but still it was a shakespeare rod. and it was on a round baitcaster(abu garcia 5601). maybe your reel isnt suited to handle smaller lures... i would try a new line, as the one major similarity my situation had to yours was the line was 14lb trilene... Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 21, 2012 Author Super User Posted June 21, 2012 I think I got it. I tried the 1/2 oz weights with some 10" plastics. While Im not getting the happy gilmore drive I am with my 6 foot medium rods, its pretty good. I think I will stick to using this around brush where a long cast is not needed. Thanks for all the help Quote
