Fountains

Quick question.......recently a nice fountain was put in at the pond I frequent. The pond is about 5 acres. Whats your take on them? Are they good spots for bass? I was thinking it would be a good area in the summer time, with the extra oxygen from the fountain. The water is about 15' deep at the fountain, right smack in the middle.

Thoughts/experiences with them?

Me and a buddy fish a place where one of the ponds has a fountain. Now I never fished it, but my buddy has caught blue gills and bass out of it. He sometimes will cast into the area of disturbance with I think he said a fluke. Also seen the neighborhood kids pull a decent one out on a live bluegill under a float. It is a fairly small pond too(.25 acres) so the ripples affect almost the entire pond. He has hooked up to a 4 pounder.

I used to fish a pond with a fountain. When the fountain was on we caught a lot of fish, when it was turned off during the evening I had to work harder to catch them. It would make sense that the fountain acts as a "generator" to create current which helps fishing.

Sweet, I was hoping to hear from people with success. Now the trick is not getting snagged on the city parks nice new fountain, haha.

I was going to ask this same question a few weeks ago but forgot. I was going to fish a tourney on a lake with a canal running to a small neighborhood pond with a fountain in the middle. This was going to be a mid-summer pattern so I was wondering if the increased oxygen and reduced light penetration would attract the fish.

I imagine it'd be a situation where baitfish would school up and suspend underneath where the water was splashing overhead with bass sitting on the bottom, coming up occasionally to bust the school of baitfish. Depending on if the bass are active or not would determine whether you'd fish them on the bottom, through the middle or closer to the top. I probably wouldn't use a standard topwater bait since it'll likely get lost in the splashing overhead.

I can tell you as a civil designer there have been times when a fountain is required by jurisdictions in ponds for that very reason, add oxygen, and current to promote a current and healthy pond instead of a stagnet storm water cesspool. So I would guess u assumptions are correct. Yes do believe you would want to go weightless and let the worm or fluke float a bit under but not down on the bottom, use the current that is made.

I fished a couple ponds with fountains in them and never really had any luck by the fountain let alone the whole pond to be honest.

I grew up fishing golf course ponds and most of them had between 1-3 fountains in them. I almost always have luck throwing plastic worms around fountains. They usually hit right at the fountain, or at the 'dripline', where the water drops actually hit the water. I consider any style of moving water really good, whether it's a fountain, waterfall, etc.

Just be careful on using anything with an exposed hook. There is usually some kind of water or power line beneath the surface, that heads right to the fountain. I lose many lures that way, so stick with soft plastics and bury the tip of your hook, or go weedless.
