There are a wide variety of new baits continually being made available to anglers. When you're looking at all the new lures - what is it that catches your eye? What is it that makes you decide to purchase that new bait over all the other ones on the shelf?

Magazine articles and ads.

Mostly the articles where the pros are using them.

But you have to take the pros' articles with a grain of salt as they are selling the products so they are going to tell you to use their products.

What we are not told is how the pros modify their baits, even the new ones they are hawking. I know that VanDam and Ike modify baits and I am sure the other pros do the same.

In the store I am usually looking for colors from two or three manufacturers. Price also plays a part as sooner or later the bait will be history.

Maybe Brad can do an article on how the pros modify their baits. That would be a scoop on all the other publications.

Usually if someone I know has had good luck with a bait I will go out and buy one. I listen to the pros when they say how they work a bait and where they fish it. When the pros start throwing out brand names and where you can buy them I usually start to tune out.

I gravitate towards lures that are different than what's already out there. It may be a new color, new body shape, or something that gives a little different action from the usual baits.

I generally buy baits recommended to me by people I know or trust.

Occasionally a pro wins a tournament with something that seems

interesting. An example is the Hollow Belly which won a tournament

at Pickwick last year.

Mini-skirts

Very true!

I'm very cheap so even when I'm at BPS I'm a sceptic. I usually spend most of my time annoying the tackle guys by trying different reel/rod combos.

Big combination of color, style, price and recommendations. Also having luck on a brand makes me consider that brand's other lures as well.

It's not just one thing that catches my eyes.

The way it looks. If I see some red like on a spinnerbait, I will buy it. Usually I will buy gulp and rapala because I have been using them since I was 9.

It's usually a techinique I'm interested in first, which has me then looking at the options out there. Price matters: I fish for fun and it's not fun throwing a $15 lure where it might not come back. It probably shouldn't matter as much as it does, but finish/color pattern weighs in.
