MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I am looking for an inexpensive Ultra Light setup for little Rock Bass and Perch, but when reading reviews online, many people say they have snapped them. But, could these just be situations where the person did not know what they were doing and did not have the drag set right, or something like that? also, suggestions, im thinking around 30 dollars. NoBassPro Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I've got a BPS microlite I've had for about 10 years thats done everything I've asked of it. Its landed a number of panfish, trout and smallmouth. I've got a shimano of some sort on it that I purchased around the same time. I think the rod runs around $40, probably the best "value rod" I've ever purchased. I don't know of any reels in that price range I can recommend. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted June 17, 2012 Super User Posted June 17, 2012 Well for 30$ you really get what you pay for. The quality wont be there if thats what you are wondering about. You could probably get an ugly stick lite or w/e they are called for around that price. May last a while too being an ugly stick. Quote

Dave P Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 I've got a Zebco UL spincast that I inherited from my grandpa that's every bit of 30 years old and still going strong. The kids use it every year. You don't candy cane it, just like any rod. Don't try to swing bass into the boat with it. I would say that you can find a decent rod for that price. Depends on what kind of reel you want, but you are probably looking at another 20-30 bucks (ish). You need a decent smooth drag, IMO. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted June 18, 2012 Super User Posted June 18, 2012 Well he said he read reviews about UL setups where people had snapped them or they had broke in im assuming the price range he was looking at. I thought i was clear on saying "you get what you pay for in low end ul". Guess i wasn't. My mistake. Recommending an ugly stick lite (might be what they are called) for ugly sticks durability i guess was off topic.... To be i guess a little more clear, if you are looking for something durable and cheap in that 30$ range for a set up try the ugly stick lite from walmart. You may have to replace the reel on it after time as its not going to have the longevity as the rod with an abundence of plastic parts. Quote
steelslinger86 Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 I bought a Shakespeare UL combo at dick's for like $25, I think it might be called stream seeker, but anyways, I didn't want to spend a lot, because I had never fished UL, and I didn't know if I would even like it. But, I have used it for over a year now, hauled in 100's of crappie and large bluegill, and some smaller bass. I can tell the reel is starting to show signs of mechanical wear, but I am more than pleased with it's performance for the money it cost, and the amount of use I have got out of it. Definately not a combo that will last me 10 years, but I never expected it to. Quote
