OK So I am ready for at least 1 really nice spinning reel. I just traded for a really nice Gloomis Mossyback spinning rod and want to pair it up with a comperable reel. I am Currently using a pair of Johnny Morris Signature series(JM10 and JM20) reels on Shimano rods(Compre and Claris) and really like them. I have looked at so many reels my head is starting to spin. (no pun intended LOL) I mainly bass fish and from a Kayak most of the time. I am not easy on equipment as that is just my nature. so I need a reel that will last and preform. mainly looking to stay in the JM20 size reels, dont need anything any bigger.

The ones I am narrowing it down to is

Shimano Stragic CI4

Quantum Smoke

ABU Revo

Pfluger Superme XT

and

The Johnny Morris Carbon lite.

I am looking for goods and bads on all.

Thanks for helping make up my mind. (I have paypal loaded up so if you also have one for sale)

Just slipping my CI4's in and out of the flush mount rod holder in my yak, I have cracked the chromed plastic rear body guard. On a 2500 and a 4000 size. A year and a half later Shimano still doesnt have the replacement parts in stock. And I BABY my reels. Not saying the others on you list will last any longer, Im sure they wont. Just good info to know.

Good info. I done use flush mount rod holders though. Dont mean I wont get them in the future.

Shimano Stagic Ci4 proven Proven durable long lasting super smooth. Pfluger Supreme Xt is not as smooth as the shimano and I am pretty sure ts as durable though . as for the others I have no experience with them good luck I suggest take your rod and try a few reels on it and see which you like different reels will change balance and weight. Thats the only advice I can give ya go Shimano..

Is there any reason the pflueger patriarch is not on that list? If not its definitely something to look into. I would take it well above anything on that list. In fact I already have twice.

I own the stradic CI4 for at least a couple of years now, and it has not disappointed. Durable, light, looks cool. I have handled pretty nice bass on it ( 5lb +). The only thing I have against mine is the handle. It's the small foam one. I have gotten use to it. I have no experience with the other reels mentioned.

No reason so I will add it. Should I take off the Supreme XT? I just know where a Supreme XT is NIB for $80 that is why it is on there

I do like the patriarch better than the supreme XT, but at $80 nib I would end this thread and jump on that right now.

Fishing out of the yak reminds me of fishing out of a small jon and so I'll give you my thoughts on what will work for you. You will hear a lot about the CI4, good reel but not for yak fishing, in fact I wouldn't use any carbon type reels as they are strong but they will get beat up much worse that they do sitting on a boat deck. Take a look at a Quantum Catalyst spinning reel, I think it is like $120 but it has the Ti bail wire with the mag trip, no bail springs to break and the bail wire is almost indestructable. I have the very first Kinetic PT spinning reel with the Ti bai wire and mag trip and it is still going like the day I got it and that is over 8 years now without ever lubing it up. I use casting most of the time and I take care of my casting equipment but my spinning reels get left behind but so far my Kinetic has held up and the Catalyst is a better reel than my Kinetic and performs really well so it will give not only good performance but a little piece of mind as it will take some abuse much better than some of the other reels.

I had a Stradic CI4 and got rid of it, It was plenty light but felt cheap to me and was not as smooth as my MgFB's, after I found a very unbiased review on the new FJ series Sradic's, I bought the new FJ 1000, I am very impressed and am sure it is a better reel!!!! If I were you I'd save some cash and for about $50.00 less than the CI4, I'd buy the New Stradic FJ 3000 same size as the 2500 but holds more line and even though it's 2 oz. heavier than the CI4, it is much smoother, more powerful, and has more features with the dual supported mainshaft, the X Ship is very noticeable!!

The new Stradics really are back on top of the spinning reel list, the X ship really is noticeable, more so bringing in larger fish!! Read this I did and am glad I tried one, I will in time replace all my other stradics with the new FJ series! It is smoother than my Sustain FE.

Street price is about $135.00 New.

i don't use spinning reels often this time of year but i use them 95% of the time for walleye during the spring/fall so i'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to using them as i want them to feel perfectly balanced with my rod for pitching light jigs. use to have a stradic ci4 1000 on a legend extreme 69mlxf and i really wanted to like the reel but it just didn't feel smooth enough. toyed with a few new stradic FJ' 1000's. same thing. they are "smooth" by all means but not effortless smooth. found the plflueger patriarch 9530 and fell in love. the pinion gear on the reel is a thing of beauty and it's extremely smooth, very light weight (6.3oz for a little bigger than a 1000 stradic but smaller than a 2500) and the drag is great. that would get my vote until you go up to the Shimano Sustain +. Then those would be my choice. if you are staying in the 200$ ballpark you really won't be disappointed in the patriarch of the ci4/fj. don't go with the XT. it's a nice reel but for 50$ more the patriarch would be a much better choice. these are retail prices. i'm sure you can find them cheaper on amazon or ebay.

Thanks for all the advice. I am a little more enlightened and confused at the same time. Lol. Thanks.

YES YES YES jump on that deal I have Stradic FI and XT's my useage the XT's have been smoother quieter. Heck get 2 and still be ahead of the price of a Stradic.

I have the supreme xt and it is a great reel and hasn't given me any problems so far and is nice and light but I've only had it 2 months but it has seen usage 4-5 days a week and has performed flawlessly.

I also have the Quantum catalyst pt both A & B and the kinetic pt with the A catalyst being roughly 5 years old and working great but it is heavier than the catalyst B. The B is about 3 years old and so is the kinetic and both see solid use with no problems or issues. They are smooth and durable with only some paint blemishes but they perform each time i grab one of them. They all can be found on ebay for less than $100 i'm sure.

Good luck on whichever reel you choose as you have some very good choices.

A proven winner for me has been my Pflueger supreme (not the xt) 35 size. Before moving this reel to the freshwater ranks it was used for nearly 2 years as a light saltwater reel. Light does not mean 5# fish, it means snook and jacks off the beach. If a reel stands up to that it's a proven winner in my book.

Why not consider Daiwa too? The tierra is a nice reel, the fuego is even better.

I have both and use them religiously....

I gotta agree with you RW it was a hell of a reel in 2009, thats when those reviews were done, but now, three years later, and all the new Stradic and Sustains got upgraded to the X SHIP design, and that did improve smoothness, and power!! not to mention an updated spool material (according to Shimano Tech Support) to help withstand the use of braid. Maybe the CI4 will get the upgrade treatment in the future, but right now its gearing and spool are old technology, so the only advantage is weight, and that really isn't going to make up for the power and smoother mechanics for me.

The Stradic FJ and Sustain FG are both getting more and more feature handed down from the Stella!! I am sure they wont leave there CI4 out in the cold, I look for it to be upgraded any time now!

The CI4 has already been updated in 2012 with xship. Ci4 rarenium. The old rarenium does not have it.

I have a Pflueger Supreme. I've had it for about a year and a half now and have nothing but good things to say about it. Love it. Wish I could have found one for that cheap!

Time will tell if the U.S.A. market gets the same treatment for the Stradic CI4 in 2013, as the Asian model Rarenium CI4, time will tell, but in 2012 it didn't.
