luisF Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 i recently purchased a 1994 nitro bass boat with a 150hp mercury. i was cleaning it up today and decided to check the air box for any debris, bugs and things like that and found a funny lookin fluid in the air box and around the openings for the carb. any body ever seen this before. when it starts it does seem to smoke a bit but only when it first starts and it is a 2 stroke. she runs real good when you put the throttle down i gps'd it at 55mph. i cleaned it out with carb spray and put everything back together will check after a couple runs to see if it comes back. i was thinking maybe some kind of fuel addititve or something. heres a pic Quote
Gene Eby Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Ethanol, added to gas, contains a lot of water. Install an inline filter, less than $100 and it will seperate and collect the H2O in the gas. Change the filter once a year and you will elimate most if not all the water. Filter change is just like the screw on oil filter on your car/truck. Or purchase ethanol free gas available at most marinas, (more expensive) and some airports. Me, I change my filter at the end of the season when I winterize my boat. Winter in Northern MI lasts from Oct. thru mid May. Hope this helps. Quote
luisF Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 Got it. I've always seen signs that say boat gas at gas stations near popular water. Can I install the filter wherever or does it need to be near the tank or motor something like that. Thanks for the help. Quote

I would suggest near the gas tank in an area that is easy to reach in order to change the filter without spilling much gasolene. The filter should be mounted after the squeeze bulb so you can use the squeeze bulb to fill the filter after installation/change. Check your boat to see how much extra fuel line is available laying in the boat. You may need to buy extra fuel line to install the filter ass'y depending on where you mount it. You will need 2 SS hose clamps. Easy install.............................Al Quote
luisF Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 ok sounds good. i found a water/fuel seperator online that has a small valve on the bottom that releases the filtered water heres what i was gonna pick up http://www.wholesalemarine.com/pc/MAL-9-37880/99990175/Mallory+Marine/Mallory+Marine+Visi-Bowl+Fuel+Water+Separator+Kits+for+Outboards.html Quote

I used teflon tape on all of threaded fittings when I installed mine..............Al Quote
