danderson05 Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 Do you think the mh is right for the bait caster? Or should I get medium? Also is 7'0" okay or should I go 6'6"? I mainly bass fish but I would bluegill and catfish from time to time. I already have the open face, just trying to figure out what bait caster to get. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 15, 2012 Super User Posted June 15, 2012 I use whatever lures I want on any rod, staying within the parameters of the rated lure weight. There is a lot of propaganda out there saying you need this rod for that lure but another rod for this kind of lure. Well maybe some do, glad to say I'm not one of them, I can fish on any of them. The rod (I take but 1 with me) I'm using is based on the kind of water I'm fishing, the lure weights, and target species, doesn't make any difference to me if I'm treble fishing or jig fishing. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 15, 2012 Super User Posted June 15, 2012 I use my spinning tackle for weightless and small soft plastics, live baits and a few small lures. Otherwise, I prefer baitcasting gear for everything else. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 15, 2012 Super User Posted June 15, 2012 When it comes to tackle, I prefer fishing like roadwarrior does. Use to be 100% spinning, Now I am 90% baitcasting gear. The MH Fast action rod is a good choice for all-around fishing. Depends on the weight of the baits you are using, but I would choose a rod rated for 1/4-1 oz. I've come to like the longer rods. You may not if fishing from shore where casting area is restricted. You will get longer casts with the longer rod...all else being equal. It appears you haven't bought the baitcasting rod yet. Any specific rods in mind? How about a reel for it? Got one yet? Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 16, 2012 Super User Posted June 16, 2012 Well, that is definitely a low cost entrance into baitcasting. If you have done much reading on here, then you know most people say to spend more, and get a decent reel because a cheap one is going to be harder to learn on. Nor will its life be a long one if you fish very often. I don't have a BPS anywhere near me so I am unfamiliar with their brand gear. Could be good. Could be a pile of you know what. The first 2 reviews on their site had me chuckling. First said the pole was a piece of crap. It backlashed constantly. Poles don't backlash. Second said it did a good job. A couple following reviews all mentioned the reels tendency to backlash. Could be their fault and not the reels, but like I said, I know nothing of BPS brand gear. I'm only going from reports from a couple people on here, but if I were you I would look at the Mettle reel and Ethos rods from Academy. The H2O XPRESS Mettle is on sale for $29.99....normally $49.99. http://www.academy.c..._-1?N=274871093 The Ethos rods go for $59.99, but for a lot less during their rod riot which happens more than once a year if you can wait. There are a couple threads on these rods. Would seem to be a good starting point...especially when on sale. However, I should actually be one of the last guys to recommend a low cost starting outfit such as you are looking for. My lowest cost rods are a couple used Falcon Originals I got for $35 in a mom-an-pop shop in Florida. Excellent rods at that price, and good rods at their new price of about $100. Caught my personal best of over 7 lbs. on the MH Original earlier this year. I did pick up an older Berkley Lightning rod on closeout at a local Walmart for $17. Too good a deal to pass up. That rod would make a good low cost rod to start with. New about $37. Hopefully there will be a few guys with actual experience with a few low cost alternatives (or even that particular combo) that will be able to give you better advice than I can. Quote
danderson05 Posted June 16, 2012 Author Posted June 16, 2012 Yeah well I am a 15 year old without a job lol. So I'm trying to save as much money as possible. I also have to save for a car to even go fishing! Lol Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 17, 2012 Super User Posted June 17, 2012 I was wondering if you were a youngster from your username. Saving money at your age is a hard thing to do.....but if you want something bad enough you will do it. Patience at your age is hard to come by. Heck, it is hard to come by at my age when I want a new toy and I am 64. :) I hope one of your parents is willing to take you fishing. My Dad started me when I was 5 with a cane pole. The following year I got a Mitchell 300 spinning reel. Spent a lot of time fishing with my Dad in the following years. Those were good times. I wish you the best of luck finding a decent outfit in your price range. 1 Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 yea the h2o stuff is good, or if a bps is near ya, get a pro qualifer on sale, then a berk lightning rod, it will last ya a long time Quote
Kyle Mahaffey Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I have a Bill Dance sig Baitcaster with a 6'6'' MH action rod with a fast tip I have 12# floro on it now. Maybe going to 15#. I like it, it was on sale when I got it from BPS. I mainly use it for everything but small spinnerbaits and a light tackle. I have a Abu Garcia M action XF tip for my normal worm fishing plus I love it for my shakey heads and weightless worms 6# red label floro. I have a Shakespear combo for my topwater fishing. it medium action and suppose to be a fast tip but its more like Medium tip. I actually have to replace the rod, because I just don't like it. It has 8# mono on it. I also use it for spinner baits if I want to keep it close to the top. Quote

Not to be critical but to get you started off on the right foot so to speak, medium, and medium heavy are actually the power of the rod, moderate, moderate fast, fast and xtra fast are some of the actions that you would normally see in rods. A medium heavy power fast action rod is very versitile and will handle most techniques with some level of sucsess. Good luck Quote
