Senkoman12 Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 today i was strolling through gander mtn on a day off and i saw on the damaged rack a lone veritas 6' 6" mh spinning rod with the first 1" broke off at the tip. the recieving manager knocked the price way down for me because i work there. i picked it up for a mere $28, add in $3 for a new tip. pretty sweet set up with my president and 8lb invisix on it. Jim McC Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I hate shopping there though. I can never find anyone for help. The store by me must use a skeleton crew. I wish there was a BPS near me. Quote

That place is like a magnet for your hard earned money then they give you credit and the wife just screams its like it a mistress or something but im sure that would be cheaper. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Since you work there, here is question for you. I went into our Gander in Fredericksburg three weeks and there were bare display hooks everywhere. the fellow in fishing told me they had no control over stock and that it is top down supply. Really??? Quote
Michael DiNardo Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 I worked at one for ten years. This is true at least at the store I worked. The individual stores have very little control over what they stock. Mike Quote

Super User webertime Posted June 15, 2012 Super User Posted June 15, 2012 Dick's is the same way. Ours in VT has a TON of Musky stuff, seriously obscene amount for a fish that is exceedingly rare here and is only catch and release now. Sometimes "corperate" doesn't seem to get it. Quote
ChrisAW Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 I'm glad I'm out of Gander. They have no interest in keeping knowledgeable, hard working employee's. They would rather be paying some kid with little to no experience in each section bottom dollar than let someone who knows the store inside and out and is worth a d**n when it comes to helping customers move up in pay scale. Might be different for some stores, but mine was ran by a bunch of golfers. Only one of the 8 or so managers and supervisors ACTUALLY hunted or fished. But that was probably why that store was the District Managers favorite, because the management did so well to keep money for the company. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted June 16, 2012 Super User Posted June 16, 2012 I hate gander mountain. I went in to one in to pick up a stradic fi1000 and they only jad the display. Looked it over and there wasnt anything wrong. Told the kid ill take it amd he turned around and said im sorry we dont have a box for it so i cant sell it. We can notify you if we get more in. I told him its discountinued and the new model was right next to it. He got his manager and he told me the same thing. I was astonished to say the least. I just laughed and said okay...havent been in to one since. Quote

Super User eyedabassman Posted June 17, 2012 Super User Posted June 17, 2012 The reson it had no UPC code to sell from! The manager could have done something to make the sale,so that I think the manager did not do his job to make the sale, and make the buyer happy and he may come back again! HAPPY FATHERS DAY! Quote

A Manager's sole responsibility is to make money at his store so he can't be blamed for that. However, it is short sighted to let good people get away just to scrimp on payroll. You have to spend money to make money. Quote

They'd notice any little thing I may have done wrong, but never notice how much I actually went above and beyond. And I had a pretty large return customer base from myself alone, a customer base that followed me to Bass Pro. They had to hire two people to replace me, and from what I've heard from the guys that still work there, they're looking for another one just to keep up with all the work I did for them. I worked fishing, firearms, receiving, and maintenance. Seems counter-intuitive to be paying 3 people a combined 24.50 hourly wage than to just bump me up into double digits alone. Quote
RobertBG Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 I just avoid big box stores at all costs these days.I was just recently looking for a bait casting setup,I visited a local mom n pop place twice but thought let me check dicks just before I buy,I went into dicks and there wasnt a sole in the fishing department, allthough 3-4 employees did pass by me no one offered to help. I'm kind of angry at myself because I did buy a few soft plastics, hooks etc that the local shop didnt stock, but I kept most of the cash in my pocket.Next chance I had i went back to the local shop and while I didnt drop the 300$ on a baitcaster I wanted(expecting a baby in aug)I purchased a st croix mojo to fit a old spinning real I had and couldnt be happier.I walked out the door with the rod,2 reels spooled in #4 and#8,some locally made buzz baits, spinners and jigs, few packs of hooks, weights and some rage tail stuff (2 bags)for $120 CASH.(she prefers cash ) Not only am I happy with what i got for the money I'm happy with where i spent it Now she did forget to put the drag washer back in my one reel, just to find out when i walked into the fishing hole, but after a phone call she stayed late, fixed the issue and gave me some crawlers to boot. The best part was she thought I had gone to dicks instead edit:that reminds me those crawlers are still in the fridge,I think I'll go use them on a log jam i found on a nice little stream tomorrow Quote
Scorcher214 Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Ya the people at my DICKs aint too knowledgeable either. They had some preserved shiners, trying to tell me that i should use them instead all of fake stuff I was going to buy (why would she not want me to spend more money?). Anyways, asked her if they were going to be adding to the poor selection of rage tail stuff they had. All they had were craws and shads (none of the colors that I would use anyways)......not saying they are bad, but I was looking for anacondas and lobsters. She was no help at all. Nobody seems to know anything there. I applied there as well, but they never contacted me. Quote

The closest employee near the fishing department would be behind the desk at the gun department. I rarely go there anyways, the only reason I'd go in there is to pick up something that Gander, Sportsman's Warehouse and WalMart don't carry, or are out of. Quote
