cowiemi Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Hi Guys, I have never used a chatterbait but I fish a lot with spinnerbait. I would like to know when it's better to use chatterbait or spinnerbait and in wich condition. Tnx in advance and sorry for my English :-/ Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 5, 2010 Super User Posted January 5, 2010 I use a Chatterbait when a spinnerbait can't be fished slow enough near the surface for the conditions. Quote
angler1 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 I agree with Wayne P, but I would say I prefer a chatterbait over a spinnerbait. I think you can do more with the overall presentation of a chatterbait espeically when useing a trailer. You can go from using it like a crankbait to using it like a jig, then buzz it like a topwater. A very versital lure. I have even put a plastic swimbait on a chatterbait to change the appearance. lightsout Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 They seem to work in alot of the same situations. I have noticed in open water spinner baits have treated me better. Depending on the weight/blades/etc. you can burn a spinnerbait a little faster, which is important on the clear flats I often fish. Either way their both great baits that you can do alot with. Quote
Needemp Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 In clearer water, I use spinnerbaits and never a Chatterbait. In dark water, I use bigger blades on my spinnerbaits, but sometimes I throw a Chatterbait. But if I am fishing a place that has been pounded with a spinnerbait, I will throw a Chatterbait to change it up. Smaller bodies of waters get pounded by bank-beaters armed with spinnerbaits. Quote

I can't tell you how many Terminator T2 packages I've found on the banks of my local ponds. : Quote
b.Lee Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 This is good info, never had enough experience to throw chatters Quote

Buzbait88 Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 On the river here, I almost always pick up a chatterbait first and if it doesn't produce I will try a spinnerbait before resorting to other techniques, but the chatterbait is my go to bait. Maybe its because the water is dirtier than most places. I have had better luck in crystal clear lakes in MN on a spinnerbait over a chatterbait. Actually in Crystal Clear lakes I find that a swimjig works wonders when they won't hit the chatter or the spinner. Quote
A-Rob Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 The flat face of the chatterbait always gets me hung up in thicker weeds. So I usually fish a spinnerbait if trying to bring it thru heavier junk. Quote

brushhoggin Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 people fish chatter baits when water clarity is hurtin. they are a bit more noisy. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted January 6, 2010 Super User Posted January 6, 2010 I take a couple of things into consideration.. 1 is wind..none to a light breeze and I toss the Chatterbait. 2...Water clarity..Clear, I toss a spinnerbait..it seems to get more bites..slightly stained, to stained..a Chatterbait. I fish a small pond which has slightly stained water and is heavly fished with spinnerbaits, yet I catch fish on both baits, but more so with the chatter bait, also get bigger fish..for some reason.. smbrule Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Chatterbaits are my go to bait for smallies shallow in rocks on Canadian shield lakes when it is really windy. They cast well into the wind and retrieve with less resistance thereby permitting more casts per unit of time. Quote
