Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted June 13, 2012 Super User Posted June 13, 2012 Went fishing for stripes Friday night. My buddy tells me these are medium size. Heck one of them stripped the drag out of my pinnacle reel. I believe its time to reup some of my gear. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted June 13, 2012 Super User Posted June 13, 2012 WOW, looks like a big medium! Quote
BamaBassChaser Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Dam, I'd like to see what he considers big. Nice fish. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 13, 2012 Super User Posted June 13, 2012 Well, I know they were fun to catch, but they are really "small" for the species. Medium around here is considered 15 to 24 lbs. Most striper fishermen consider 25+ "big". The Tennessee River produces a ton of 30 lb+. The State Record is 65 lb 6 oz. Quote

My buddy caught a 36lber a few weeks back. That thing wad enormous. Hopefully She Who Must be Obeyed will let me go again this Friday evening. I'm loving catching these fish. Quote
jslacker Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 What's wrong with the coloration and pinkness on the bottom? Stripers round here are uniform in color. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 14, 2012 Super User Posted June 14, 2012 Try your A-Rig, it's perfect for stripes! Quote

Tattoo25 Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Great fish! Here locally at the Neely Henry dam they get very large. You can spend 2 or 3 hrs out there and leave with a stringer full using nothing but a spoon. Quote

The stripe fishing is definitely giving me a break from the work of bass fishing. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted June 28, 2012 Super User Posted June 28, 2012 Man those are some nice fish I bet they taste even on the grill better than they look... I love me some sea bass Quote
sean_steiner Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I live near the chesapeake bay in Maryland, and I can tell you those are in fact medium sized, maybe even on the lower end of the medium sized scale. Stripers are the premier tidal fish here, and I have seen absolutely humongous stripers pulled out the of the bay. Another good thing about stripers too is that they can survive in freshwater, either as a hybrid or pure. They don't breed however in the freshwater lakes however, and have to be continually stocked. They do reach those giant bay sized proportions in lakes that are large enough to support them, as long as they aren't taken out. Quote
MultiSpeciesFisherman Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Sean I know Lake Cumberland Kentucky has breeding stripers. The ones we caught this year were either full of eggs, full of sperm, or all drawn out due to having just laid out all their eggs. Quote

The ones we caught this year were either full of eggs, full of sperm, or all drawn out due to having just laid out all their eggs. They will breed in the feeder streams to lakes, but from what I've read from the natural resources guys in maryland is that the eggs die because once they enter the lake they sink to the bottom. Don't know if this is true for hybrids. Might be different where you guys are, be interesting to know.. Quote
mikey5string Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 is that freshwater? Those would be medium "schoolies" in the salt up here. Someone just caught a world record in CT. 81lbs !!!!! Striper fishing is great around here. They get HUGE and are my favorite saltwater fish to target. Here are a couple I got last season. These are nice fish but nothing special. Do they have them in lakes down south? From what ive seen they are smaller than the Saltwater bass but are still awesome fish. Quote
mikey5string Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 that might be the same one. I caught a couple that day, a lot of bluefish though. Blues are fun to catch. Kinda looked at as "trash fish" with Striper fishermen. An agressive predator that averages 8-12lbs and fights can be a "trash fish". Must be good fishin! I would love to catch them in lakes with my LMB gear! Quote

Those were caught out of lay lake. They seem to be in a decent amount of the lakes in Alabama. My buddy caught two more 30lbers last Tuesday night. That man tears them up down here. Quote
