What Else Can I Use My Crankbait Rod For?

I have an e21 carrot stix crankin rod (6'9'' M-M) but I don't use crankbaits a whole lot anymore. What other common techniques could I use this rod for?

Topwater, Jerkbaits, traps... maybe slow rolling a spinnerbait. Crankbait rods a pretty much only good for baits with treble hooks.

Spinnerbaits, lipless cranks, as well topwater and jerkbaits as KevO has already mentioned. I'm sorry if you want to hear of people using them to fish worms or jigs with but not many anglers would do that, you would miss a lot of fish with a soft rod trying to set the hook using a Texas rigged plastic, just not enough backbone.

I would NOT use a crankbait rod for spinnerbaits. That big hook takes a bit of force to set. Any treble hook bait would be fine. Vertical jigging spoons or silver buddies would be a good choice for that rod as well.

I've used mine for big swimbaits. Had trouble stickin em with a single hook. It did OK with the magic swimmer and its trebles. My Powell is pretty limber, So its best for mainly crankin.

It's a Carrot Stick..........so sooner or later it will have it's second technique it excels at...............staking vegetables.

While I generally would agree with that, I have to say that I fish a LOT of spinnerbaits on by graphite crank rods. The Cumara's for instance fish a spinnerbait exceedingly well.

i disagree. i know people that like a moderate action to allow a following fish to take the spinnerbait deeper. the lamiglas "crank 'n blade" rod was made with cranks and spinnerbaits in mind and that thing is a noodle. imho, a mod action works well for deep slow rolling, especially when a trailer hook is not employed. i think the issue here with the OP is that his carrot stix is a medium rod...i like to go medium-heavy, even for 1/4-ounce spinners.

I have no doubt it will throw the bait, but good luck with the hook set at distance. I know my Avid AVC70MHM, a great cranking rod, flat out sucks for spinnerbaits. It's too slow to load up on the hook set, and fish come unbuttoned. I bought that rod actually thinking it would be my spinnerbait rod. It isn't. Probably one of the better mistake purchases, though. Great at treble hooked baits.

I was just wondering if you are using braid or mono?? I use the Avid AVC70MM for both, cranks and spinners, and as you said the Avid cranckbait rod is a true KEEPER! but I seem to get great results using it with Braid for spinners, and it is I would think a little slower to load than the MHM. I don't use a trailer either, straight up with just the skirt. If using it with mono, even fluorocarbon you may want to try it with braid, I use Braid 100%.

Now what I realy found that made this medium moderate action a jewel in the rough for me was a early spring Walleye rod!!!! I fish the Maummee river off Lake Erie, THE LARGEST WALLEYE RIVER RUN IN THE WORLD!! It is very fast water and you really have to stay on bottom and let it drift, any reeling and forget it. The thing is it is moving so fast that the fish have very little time to get the Floating jig, (a Floating Jig with a twister tail is the preferred bait) and this rod seems to be soft enough to give them time to get the jig in there mouth and I don't even set the hook. The rod has good feel and I know when it's bouncing along the bottom when the rod starts to load, I simply raise it and lift back, if it is a snag it usually drifts on or if it is a fish the head shakin starts, and the fun is on, and with fish up to 10# the battle can be tremendous, on the med. action!! I tried this for smallies in the river and if the current is fast it works great, but you really need fast water or I go to my AVS70MF when the current slows.

I have the AVC70MM as well. I don't use braid for that application, and that rod is even worse with big hooks. Braid + zebra mussels = failure up here. If I can just figure out how to make scissors out of the zebes, I could make a million dollars, heh.

That's a better statement, JF. In most cases, I use a reaction rod for roll casting short distances, not much more than that. If I get out beyond about 35' I'm fishing a 7-4 Blade Slinger that I had built on a Loomis Saltwater blank.

Even the short, sniper style spinnerbaiting, where you might just run the bait 6' through a pocket, I use a x-fast rod, AVC62MXF. I just can't trust a buggy whip for this. Maybe if I was using braid, but that just doesn't work for me.
