Hooked! (And Hesitant To Change)

In my garage holds some of my most prized possessions. Included are my KVD tackle bag with 5 trays of goodies and countless "hidden" compartments, life jackets, and a variety of rod/reel combos. I ventured to Walmart a couple weeks ago and bought a 3 pack of Storm swim minnows 1/4 oz. I have caught TONS of fish with these babies and I just can't seem to use my other lures. LOL! This may seem like a dumb question, but was wondering if anyone else has ever found the "go to" bait and had trouble using the other tools in the box???

oh yeah iv had that problem after seeing bassresources video last year on how to rig and throw the double fluke rig. i'll try other lures but if they don't get bit in like a couple casts im grabbing that double fluke and throwing that again.

Jigs will do that to you. But you can't have enough.

I know the feeling. The other day just for giggles I threw a spinner a few times and got nothing. I was like oh well I tried. Put the minnow back on and in like 3 casts I set on a 3lbs.'er. :-)

I have that problem too. After a few minutes I usually change to a black worm. Trying to break that habit lately though.

If nothing works, a split shot rig with a 6" ribbon tail worm or baby rage craw will. I can catch fish with pretty much any lure in my tackle box if I work at it hard enough. But with the split shot rig seems to fall right into there mouths.

I got into a rut with a spinnerbait, it has been my favorite bait since the first time I caught a fish on it at a young age. My problem was knowing it wasn't the right bait for the conditions but still not being able to put it down but I have learned how to be able to get away from the one lure rut as I call it. You need to look at the lures in your box the same way you look at the tools in your tool box, you may have a favorite saw but you aren't going to use it hammer nails and the same with lures. If the fish are hitting the one lure you're hooked on using then it may be the right tool for the job but when they stop biting it you need to look and find something else and when you catch some on another bait it will give you confidence in something else and give you more to choose from.

Yea I have a "secret bait" when using carolina-rig, I have yet to not land bass on.

Well said. I have fallen into the situation where the minnows are not producing strikes. I need to search the tackle box when that time comes. :-)

Yeah, eventually bass do get "smarter" on their choice of bait...lol,they say think like a bass, well I am...lol I wouldn't want to be hooked after being hooked once lol.

Spinnerbait for me. I rely on it WAY too much. I always do good until the sun is up and out and then when the bite slows down or stops i keep throwing it for some reason.

When I first started bass fishing, I was using a buzzbait and catching massive amounts of bass every time I hit the local pond. The excitement I received from watching a hog explode on my buzzbait was like none other. Because of these things, I find that I rely on my buzzbait a little too much today. I always try to choose my lure considering the conditions....but if nothing's striking after awhile, I always throw a buzzbait.

Ive had a sammy tied on for so long and just cant seem to get to it off, lol.

Actually summers here, its hot out and all i want to do is fish topwater early morning and night so it might not ever come off

All we as fisherman have to do is be one step ahead of the bass............or is it one swim ahead...............either way. LOL

As do I but they just keep catching fish non stop. I am not complaining though and will fish swimbaits 24/7 365. It seems as if there is never a wrong time to use swimbaits. It doesn't matter if it's morning, afternoon, night, hot, cold, sun, rain, cloudy, clear.

My go to is also a swimbait. I don't have one in paticular but use them situationaly. But its usally one of three depending on the cover (or lack of) I'm fishing. My main three are a Magic Swimmer for open water, a Money Minnow for somewhat weedy area, and the YUM version of the grass pig for putting it into a grassy area.

I find it hard to put these down but if I do its usually for a jig or a chatterbait. I keep wanting to get more experience with a texas rig (although I've been liking the Jika better) but find it really hard to get away from the swimbaits.

Kinda limited to what I can bring(kayak fishing),but usually it's grubs.....I can't seem to pull away from them. I'm gonna leave em' home next week and bring nothing but jigs,frogs & stickbaits.

When you all are talking about jigs do you cast them and then reel them in or drop them straight down from the boat and bob them up and down?

Swimming jig- toss out,let it sink a bit,depending on depth and structure, and slow reel back.

Flipping and pitching are done fairly close to the cover or structure, fished twiching or slow up and down.
