Super User AK-Jax86 Posted June 7, 2012 Super User Posted June 7, 2012 I was fishing in my backyard around 2pm with my girlfriend. She caught a 2.8# within 10 mins of us fishing, we were using live shiners. Then she cast back out and got a huge strike and the line snapped off the hook, we were using the palomar knot. Then she caught a 2.3# in a different spot. So I went to the spot where she got the big strike and cast out. Not even 30 seconds after it hit the water I get a huge strike I set the hook and the line snapped off AGAIN, still palomar knot. Then about 30 minutes later I see a fish chase a little bait fish, could have been a baby bass or bluegill, to the top of the water and attack it. So I cast my shiner out that way and was reeling it in slowly then BOOM. I was reeling it in the fish put up an amazing fight. It jumped out of the water fully 3 times I thought it was gonna get unhooked. My girlfriend gets the net and scooped it up. I open its mouth and this is what I see.... It was the same fish that took our hooks 2 times in a row, and I was running low on hooks too lol, 3rd times a charm. It weighed 4.2#, the way it snapped the lines and the way it fought we thought it was gonna be a lot bigger.... but this fish was strong as hell and put up one hell of a fight. Quote
DrNip Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 In the end you caught a nice fish and retrieved your hooks. Nice story. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted June 8, 2012 Super User Posted June 8, 2012 Congrats on the fish and getting your hooks back! What pound line are you using? Might either be your line, or drag setting. Jeff Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 8, 2012 Super User Posted June 8, 2012 Try a circle hook with a live shiner, 8# line should be sufficient. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted June 8, 2012 Super User Posted June 8, 2012 With 8 lb line, those fish over 3.5lbs should pull a little drag if they are not coming right at you. If not maybe your drag is set to tight and that is causing the shock and line break! When I say a little, I don't mean running all the way around the pond, but maybe a couple feet at a time! Super User AK-Jax86 Posted June 8, 2012 Author Super User Posted June 8, 2012 Hopefully you got the hooks out. Yea I got all the hooks out of it. I hate when I hook a fish and the hook is in a spot where I can't get it out. I always make an effort to get the hook out whenever I can. If I was hooked in the mouth and someone was releasing me I'd hope they would do the same for me Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 8, 2012 Super User Posted June 8, 2012 Next time I need line I'm gonna see if Dick's has the yo zuri hybrid line. Nice catch. U know there is a Gander Mountain right down 95 in St. Augustine exit. Bout same as going to Orange Park, way better fishing section. and there was another store up on atlantic called Academy, they have a lot of discounted or no longer made items from the couple of folks I talked to Quote
