90x Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I just bought my brother his first fishing rod and tackle box. So far he has some roadrunners with crappie thunder, zoom ss worms and lizards, senkos, lucky strike worms, and some other panfish baits. Besides terminal tackle what else should I include? My little brother is 3. He wont be fishing until 4 though. Hate winter in the north!!! Quote
Bass XL Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Sounds like your set man! Way to get him going early! Quote
CHEVYRIDAZ Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I would throw some 1/4oz rattle traps and spinnerbaits in the mix as well. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted December 28, 2009 Super User Posted December 28, 2009 Never hurts a bobber and some hooks. That's all you need for some one his age. Quote
NewAngler Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Never hurts a bobber and some hooks. That's all you need for some one his age. Actually, with all do respect I disagree. I find that a younger age kids want something to constantly do, a moving lure is probably your best bet. In-line spinners like Mepps or Rooster-tails WILL catch a variety of different spieces, but also try a bass spinner. Make sure you're near him while he's cranking that bad boy in, do you remember your first bass strike? Quote
simplejoe Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 My son is 6, when I started him out at 3 I just got him a bobber and some red Trout Magnet maggots. Now my daughter is turning 4 I'm doing the same thing. Don't get him too many lures you'll just confuse him and make not interesting for him. Remember keep it simple and let him have fun with it. fmoore Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Curly tail grubs and jigheads. You can not work this bait incorrectly! But I'd wait until he's about 6 to get him into lure fishing. Quote
90x Posted January 1, 2010 Author Posted January 1, 2010 what i pretty much did was open all my gear and told him to pick out any bait he wants. Last summer we went to Michigan and had a large lake in our backyard. I gave him the bobber and nightcrawler and he caught a lot of bluegill. The water was clear as day and he could see the fish strike. We ran out of worms and he used marshmallows which worked even better. My brother is not the most patient person in the world. after the gills, he told me he wanted to catch some "big fishies". Believe it or not, being a first generation bass fisherman, i taught myself all I know. I had plastics but had no idea how to use them until 2 years ago. so I would like to introduce him first so that he will have more fun and we wont have to worry about live bait. I was actually going to make a worm farm for him this year just in case we do not feel like using lures. I wanna make sure he becomes the best fisherman possible. Thanks for the advice. Quote
Dalton Tam Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 lol my dad tied on a hookless power ranger cork for me. He was fishing topwater in the lilly pads when I threw out with that yellow thing and about a 3 lb bass hit it. I didn't have any hooks on it but I reeled until he let go. That's when my dad let me use real baits. Quote
jeremyt Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I agree with some of the earlier posts, I started my son out at 2 and he just wanted to cast out and reel it in. If you can teach your little brother to have some patience then the bobber and worms are the way to go. I would just throw out there to let him take a toy with him incase he gets bored and after the trip take him for an icee or something, that way the trips will be really memorable for him and if the fishing isn't hot atleast the memories will be fond and he will continue to look forward to the trips.
