Fishing Line For A Beginner Baitcaster

I have a Shakespeare Axiom rod/reel combo. I want to get to know how to really use this rod so once I get to know how to throw a baitcaster I can upgrade to a better rod and reel setup. This is the only baitcaster I have. It is a 6'6"M rod. The ratio on the reel is 6.3:1. I am wanting to put a line on here that will allow me to get a good hang of how to throw a baitcaster without giving me many problems. I would be throwing mainly spinnerbaits on this setup until I get use to it then maybe trying some lighter bait. Which type of line do you recommend in this scenario?

If this is your first baitcasting combo, I would recommend spooling up with an inexpensive mono to learn. Trilene Big Game in 12# would work well. You can get a big ol' spool at Wal-Mart for under 10 bucks, enough to fill your reel several times.

During the learning process, you will probably throw some horrendous backlashes and destroy some line cutting them out.

Trilene xt or big game from 12 to 14, use bigger bait so it's easier to throw, something like 3/8oz

10 to 12 LB mono for beginner. Move up to the more expensive stuff once your comfy you won't be pickin out over runs. Big spools of Sten at wallyworld for just a few bucks.

Lots of good advice above, but I would recommend that you start with braided line - provided that you are a patient man. Even the backlash from hell can be removed without damaging the line whatsoever. My worst backlash took me over two hours to remove. Obviously, I wasn't on the water, and obviously I can be patient when I want to be. I would suggest that you start with 30#.

all you need is trilene big game or trilene xl. Both are great mono lines and will cost you less than 10$. I recommend trilene big game in 12 lbs. You can get a huge spool for cheap. You dont need anything spectacular just yet. Keep it simple until you get the hang of it. THEN buy Yo Zuri Hybrid in 12#

Go with a soft mono. Trilene XL is one but there are many. Beginners will sooner or later get a massive backlash and no point in cutting off expensive braid or flouro lines. I like 12# but 10# to about 19# works depending on your location. Where I fish most of the cover is rocks and you don't pull free from rocks vary often, you need to get behind the bait. Where theres lots of wood or weed it is a different matter.
