wackyworm66 Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Hello everyone and happy New Year's. I have been considering buying tungsten weights for my texas rigs. Is tungsten worth the price difference? and would you use it on carolina rigs as well? Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted December 29, 2009 Super User Posted December 29, 2009 Yes and yes if you can afford it. Oh by the way , welcome. Quote
wackyworm66 Posted December 29, 2009 Author Posted December 29, 2009 thanks for the reply and the welcome. I can see how there is definite advantages to tungsten, I just didn't know if it was significant enough to justify the cost. Quote
simplejoe Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Yes tungsten is worth the money, The sensitivity on tungsten compared to lead is double. Buy a pack and try them you won't be disappointed. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 Fishing tungsten is like riding bareback. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Fishing tungsten is like riding bareback. hahahhah i couldn't have said it any better! Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 I swore I would never spend the money for tungsten weights. Then I fished with them. Can't do without them. Quote
basspro96 Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Tungsten is worth it if you have the dough..Its a must on Carolina rigs though. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 I swore I would never spend the money for tungsten weights. Then I fished with them. Can't do without them. Agree! Personally I stay away from it on a c-rig though. Not that I don't absolutely love it but it goes back to the "if you can afford it" factor. :-/ I am prone to losing c -rigs pretty often. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 I love Tungsten! In fact, now that I think of it, the thought of having to go back to lead makes me want to vomit. Quote

Tru-Tungsten used to make a product called the "finesse c-rig weight" They aren't in production anymore, but if you can find them, you won't have to worry about losing weights on the carolina rig anymore. flippin and pitchin Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I too was skeptical at first but tried a pack. That and flourocarbon will make you think you have a new high end super sensitive rod. If you shop hard you can find some bulk buys that make them more affordable. Split the order with buddies and you are good to go. Quote
aarogb Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Once you go tungsten you never go back. Quote
wackyworm66 Posted December 30, 2009 Author Posted December 30, 2009 thanks to everyone. I am going to find me some tungsten weights. Thanks to pitchin and flippin for the bulk advice. I will see what I can find. Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 It really doesn't matter to me I do fine with both Quote
mike bat Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 there is no doubt in my mind ... tru tungston is the way to go ... you get so much better feel .... and when pitching or flipping thats really what you need ,, IMO ... Quote
RockvilleMDAngler Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I only use Tungsten but for different reasons than the ones posted. I use high end rods (Loomis GLX, Dobyns ExTreme Champion) and fluorocarbon for my soft plastic fishing so I never complained about the sensitivity of lead weights, but the tungsten weights are smaller and are more exact. You never buy a 3/16 ounce tru tungsten worm weight and have it weigh anything other than 3/16 ounce, the same cannot be said for most lead weights. I have had lead weights vary drastically in actual weight from the same package. The smaller size of the weights gets me more bites than lead. Any sensitivity increase is just icing on the cake. Super User Catt Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 I've often heard this used as a reason to use tungsten but just out of curiosity how exactly does one determine if he has in fact gotten more bites with tungsten? Quote
RockvilleMDAngler Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I've often heard this used as a reason to use tungsten but just out of curiosity how exactly does one determine if he has in fact gotten more bites with tungsten? I guess it is impossible to prove but I definitely noticed an increase in the amount of fish I caught when I switched to the tungsten weights. I guess it could be that the tungsten weights are the same color as the worm which was not the case when I was using unpainted lead. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 i like tungsten. the weights are so tiny and compact they are less noticeable. also the sensitivity definitely does increase. Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 The way tungsten "feels" when it comes in contact with another object heightens our awareness of what is taking place with our lure thus increasing our "feel" for the bite but it's something we should already be adept at when fishing a Texas Rig. Yes you will feel more bits with tungsten but what it really shows is how poor you were with a Texas Rig. Y'all really want to increase you "feel" with a Texas Rig? Fish it at night with or without tungsten Quote
Super User burleytog Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 Yes you will feel more bits with tungsten but what it really shows is how poor you were with a Texas Rig. : Do you ever stop? Quote

Think about it was it the sinker material or angler that stopped us from feeling those bites? Quote
