zildjian Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Hey guys, I just bought a new bass boat and I wanted to start fishing crankbaits more. My 6'9" MH isn't cutting it lol I want to get a rod that i can fish mid shallow/deep water while running my crank baits. Wasn't sure if you guys prefer any specific rod company's, size and action for this type of all around cranking rod. I've been doing research and checking various forums, and I noticed most people suggest around 7'6" MH cranking rod with a slower gear ratio reel like 5:1's. Then I noticed a huge debate on Glass cranking rods vs Graphite Rods. Not sure which would be better or not. But I know lots of people were talking about the Dobyns line of cranking rods. Also, as a new boat owner, I'm so happy to actually be out on the lake and start to fish for real, but once I get out there I have no idea what I'm doing. I've been just trolling the shorelines, but the water is so deep. Everywhere is like 15-20ft so spots are really shallow. But I'm having a hard time finding fish properly and I'm not sure what to throw and where. I know crankbaits are great lures and especially around this season (summer) but I never throw them while shoreline fishing. But now I'm on the water and I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm fishing lots of visual cover too, but everywhere is so deep. Any help would be awesome! Thank you guys! -Zildjian Quote
stkbassn Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Congrats on the boat! I miss mine for sure. Personally, I like a longer crankbait rod. I have the Powell Composite Deep Cranking rod and it's 7'11. It's the lightest, sweetest cranking rod I've owned or seen to be honest. I like the longer rod for the long casting of deep cranks. I use a Curado 200 E 5 which has the slower gear ratio. You don't have to get a Powell but I would recommend at least a 7'4 and up for the casting distance. Quote
jj'sbassinforfun Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I think the rod material depends on your hook set. If you drive it home with a stiffer rod you can pull the hooks out of the fish and would have better luck with a glass rod that is more forgiving. You'll feel the bite and bottom better with the composite rod, But you'll have to tone down the hookset some. Personal choice and style. I prefer the longer glass rod for 20+ cranks, With a low gear reel. But that's just me. Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Powell has an incredible max glass crank rod: 703CB for $139. I just order a second one b/c i throw my weightless plastics on it. Its casts like butter w/ a mod fast tip so you don't rip the treble hooks out of their mouths. I'll shoot ya a PM if ya wanna meet up and cast it Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 The Dobyns Champion 705Cb Glass is my go to rod. It's a composite, small diameter blank, light and very good feel. You can throw square bills to DD22's with this model. If you feel the need to launch a bait the 765CB Glass provides that extra length. My next two rods will be the 765CB Glass and the 704CB for jerbaits. Then i'm dialed. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 2, 2012 Super User Posted June 2, 2012 I never cared for glass rods as they were too heavy for my liking but a friend recently had me use his glass rod for a day of cranking and I liked it so much I got one. Mine is an old but brand new never used Quantum Tour Edition USA, it was made in America in the 90's using a Lamiglas E-Glass blank, it is 7' MH and is rated for 1/4oz to 1oz. This is great with a 5.4:1 reel for Rapala DT 14s and DT 16s and I don't feel as the rod is struggling. Some like to use a lighter rod so to compensate for the resistance they like to use a longer rod with provides more leverage but either way works. If you go with the lighter 3 or 4 power rod then you need to look at a 7'6" and longer but if you look at a 5 or 6 power you will have no problem with a 6'10" to 7'3". Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 I just picked up the 764 CB RM Z, Give us a report after you run it through the gauntlet. The RM (Randy Macabee) is supposed to be a bit stiffer that the regular CB's. I would love to hear your opinion on that stick. Quote

You can literally throw any kind of crank on any kind of line with it. I can bomb a dd 22 out on it, the 765 will bomb it out a wee bit further. I just prefer the shorter rod for most fishing we do down here. You can very accurately cast with that 7 footer. Quote
