VABasser Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 Ok, I need some suggestions. I'm doing the usual offseason load up on gear and am looking at expanding my spook type of bait selection. In the past I have only used the Heddon Spook, but I am sure that there are numerous companies that make similar baits. What are your favorite walk the dog type baits that you would recommend? Thanks Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted December 25, 2009 Super User Posted December 25, 2009 I think the Lucky Craft Sammy is easier to work. Quote

brushhoggin Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 I think the Lucky Craft Sammy is easier to work. x2 Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted December 25, 2009 Super User Posted December 25, 2009 I think the Lucky Craft Sammy is easier to work. x2 I will disagree, I have found the original spook to be the easiest to fish of all I've tried including the Sammy, skitterwalk, x-walk, and many others Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 Try the BPS XPS Slimdog. Has a similar body design as the LC Sammy at 1/4 the price. Very easy to establish a cadence with this bait. (the Sammy's are top end with top of the line finishes and hardware though.) and you don't have to carry a plastic baggy when you walk these dogs. The slim dog from bass pro is an excellent bait as is the RI Vixen. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 26, 2009 Super User Posted December 26, 2009 The Spro Dawg is a pretty underrated bait. I have caught as many if not more on it as Sammys, comes with excellant hooks/hardware. Great paint jobs, and is only about $9 -$10, compaired to $15-$18 for Sammys. I also like the Rapala Skitter Walk. I was never a big fan of any of the Spooks, but a lot of guys swear by them. Quote
rowyourboat Posted December 26, 2009 Posted December 26, 2009 i dont have a lot of experience (in fact i haven't used any of the others mentioned) but i caught 10-15 fish this summer on the super spook jr. Quote
VABasser Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 Thanks guys for the suggestions. I'll take a look at these and decide, might go with a couple different brands. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 27, 2009 Super User Posted December 27, 2009 My #1 and there isn't even a close second is a Mirrorlure Pappadog, you can pop it, walkit. or both at the same time. Quote
frogflogger Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 The little High Roller - small wood bait - big fish Quote
jdw174 Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Two more that you can walk are the Pop-R and the Chug Bug. Quote
TimJ Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 JDW, I'm with you on the bug and pop-r. I find it much easier to walk the pop-r with my spinning rig, though. My favourite spook-type lure was given to me about 6+ yrs ago. A lure distributor friend got a few to try out...I think it's a pupfish, in bone. We just call it "the dildo". I will post a pic later today after I dig it out and maybe someone can tell me if it's actually a pupfish. This thing walks like a charm. I've retired it from most pike areas and St.Clair open waters...muskie...but I still use it a lot. TJ Quote
RockvilleMDAngler Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Even though it is a hybrid I like the Lucky Craft Gunfish the best. It walks better than the non-cupped baits and can be cast a country mile. It makes a tiny bit more noise than a normal walk-the-dog bait and gets more strikes IMHO. Quote
Buzbait88 Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I use an off brand called a tailwalker. They will have a really cool feature this year to. It will have a small magnet in the belly to keep the tucked under the belly of the bait when retrieving it to help keep the line from getting hooked into it and they are pretty good size, but don't let that fool you. I'm probably going to get in trouble cause they sponsor me, but here is a promo video I did for them last year. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 Another vote for LC's Sammy and Gunfish, the Spittin' Image, and Megabass Giant Dog-X. Last summer I had a blast walking the XCalibur ZellPop in the 1/4oz size. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 One that I see hasn't been mentioned is the Rapala XRAP. Quote
TimJ Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 question: is this a pupfish? the hooks are not original as I have went through a few sets. no toothy critters have ate it...yet. thanks. TJ Quote
Bigs Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 River2Sea makes one called the bubble walker and its great for the money. Got mine from ***. I also bought a sebile *** and sebile ghost walker from TW but havent had a chance to use them yet, they been sittin in my tackle box lookin pretty for probably 4 months now.Once the topwater bite gets good again in the spring Im gonna be playin with all 3 of these lures alot in the morning when Im not throwing 1/8 ounce buzzbaits.
