flippin and pitchin Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 The only time I thought chewing was cool was when Jose Wales spit on the foreheads of the guys he just shot. I not passing judgement guys. I am an ex-smoker and chewer from many many years back. I just have seen the long term results and it's not good. Enough said. Quote
bwell Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 I have been dipping Skoal for about 6 years now. I only dip when I am outside (fishing, hunting, golfing, drinking beer by a fire, ect..) I can go weeks without one but once I am on the water, course, field, I am feeling the need, I actually cant not dip while I am inside, it makes me feel sick. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 5, 2012 Super User Posted June 5, 2012 I have heard chewing tobacco causes mouth and tounge cancer. It is also disgusting to see and have the individual spit in a bottle or cup. It stains your teeth. Otherwise, I don't see any problem with it. Just make sure you have very good health insurance to cover the cancer surgery, chemo and drugs plus a long term disability insurance policy and good life insurance so your wife and kids can get along until your wife remarries. Super User 00 mod Posted June 6, 2012 Super User Posted June 6, 2012 I dipped from the age of 16-23 almost 24. My dip of choice was Skoal (started with cherry, then went to mint, wintergreen, berry and then pouches). I quit cold turkey on New Years Day. I had gotten to the point where it was disgusting and I didn't want to do it anymore. I was dipping a can a day, EASY. Quitting was a good thing, not only for the health benefits, but for the wallet. My main physical problem was chronic heartburn and acid reflux. Fast forward 4 years. The exact next trip after catching my pb (March 30, 2011) I stuck a hog bigger than my pb. She came jumping out of the water several times, and I had her on a jig, so I knew she was mine. WRONG. She jumped and threw my jig back at me like nobody's business. I got so mad, I got a pouch(Grizzly Wintergreen) from my fishing partner. All it took was one and I was hooked again. Dipped those pouches for 10 months or so and quit cold turkey again. This time I am making it stick. My same health problems had come back up, and now they are gone again. it is a hard thing, and you mus want to do it for you, not someone else. I still fish with that same guy, for over 3 years now at least 3 of the 4 Sundays a month, and he still dips. It is VERY HARD. But you have to not want it anymore. Not that I couldn't lick a can of skoal off the dirt beside the boat ramp, because I could. I'm done. And if I have a moment of weakness again, I will quit again. But I do not plan on it. Jeff Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I plan on quitting soon, but I like Grizzly straight. Quote
Addicted to Smallies Posted June 6, 2012 Author Posted June 6, 2012 Any of you guys try the mint-based non-tobacco snuff as a way to quit? I'm wondering if just having something "in my mouth" that feels like a Skoal Pouch would help... especially if combined with a nicotine patch for the first couple of weeks. Quote
