Addicted to Smallies Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Just wondering, how many of you guys dip or chew? What's your pick in brand? If you do dip/chew, are you trying to quit? Ever have any health issues related to it? As for me, I've been dipping off and on since high school (now 42), but trying like heck to quit. Tried the patch and the gum, but nothing has stuck yet... but I keep trying. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted June 1, 2012 Super User Posted June 1, 2012 yeah,Grizzly wintergreen. Health issues, nothing yet.... My job is banning all use of tobacco in plant.....Which is gonna suckkkkkk! I may have to try to quit because of this. But I have a bad bad habit of dipping tobacco before the first cast of the day when i fish.It calms me down for the day as well.So a bad day doesn't seem so bad. Honestly Junk food has did more damage to my health than tobacco and alcohol so far. Quote
Revo_Carrot Stix Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Same boat as you. I'm 42 and dip Copenhagen since high school. I have not had any health problems (knock on wood) but guessing it's only a matter of time. I've tried about everything. Doctor prescribed a few RX in the past: Wellbutrin (sp?) - I guess this was originally used on vets for depression in the 60's or 70's. During the trial, doctors noticed the vets quit smoking. It helped me stop chewing. I got cotton mouth and felt high or light-headed a lot of the time. I didn't like taking it and stopped after 1 month. I was able to quit for about 3 months and just gave in. Chantix (sp?) - I did this for awhile, but really had some wierd/realistic dreams about every other night which feaked me out a little (i'm not big into taking pills/medince to begin with) There is a whole program/dosage/online support fourm that is ok. It worked a couple months for me. To me, it's not about the nicotine. I need to break the habit and associations with dipping (fishing, mowing the lawn, watching baseball, etc.) Part of me thinks - I just need to be a man and stop it altogether, it's not worth it. The other part views it as something I've always done. At this point, I'm only hurting myself. Eventually, it will hurt others around me. there's my two cents. Quote
OHIO Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Copenhagen Wintergreen for around three years. I guess I would like to quit, but I don't really want to bad enough. Quote
zip pow Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Copenhagen oringal for 20 years i quit a couple months ago gum line reseeded and root showing on front tooth so i quit but my mouth waters every time i see a can Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted June 1, 2012 Super User Posted June 1, 2012 Skoal from 17-39. Redman Golden Blend from 39 to present, 45. I quit cold turkey for 6 months, that's when I went from Skoal to Redman. Chew deffinately stains the teeth more than dip. Quote

Addicted to Smallies Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 I'm 100% with Revo on this... it's more of an "activity habit" than anything, I think. I can go a week or two when we're on vacation or something, but when I'm in the fishing or other outdoor habits, it just seems like I HAVE to have a dip in my mouth. It's killing me that I'm such a p@$$y and can't just quite cold turkey, too. Tried the patches (weird dreams) the gum (no impact whatsoever) but nothing else. I think I just have to man up and quit. Fat-G Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 A guy I know has no lower jaw. Skoal dipper from high school. Not good. That's the kind of **** I DON'T want to have happen. I like dipping, and it's an activities thing for me as well. It sucks though, I've wasted so much money on it. Luckily my dentist said it hasn't done anything yet after two years. Sometimes I just do it no matter what, even when I don't feel like it. I think I'm going to try this: Dipping like once or twice a day, just at the times where I want one, it's a reasonable time to do it, and I can actually enjoy it. Gonna start getting those little pouches too. God now I'm ticked at myself Quote
NoBassPro Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Copenhagen. I quit for almost a year, then started traveling for work. The boredom set in and I went back to chewing. Never used the patches, just altoids. Wasn't the nicotine so much as having something in my mouth. All told, I go through maybe a tin a week, and usually thats because it dries out before I use it. Revo_Carrot Stix Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Fat G - I don't want to sound preachy (believe me), but if you can handle "once or twice a day" my challenge to you is to just not do it man. Best case scenario - you satisfy a slight craving. Worse case - you're dipping 18 hrs day. I use to have this "badge of honor" with the fellas because i chewed Copenhagen Snuff and never spit. I was young and thought it was cool. Now, these same guys are telling me that I need to quit while I'm ahead (no health problems). Not so cool anymore. On a side note, has anyone caught those anti-smoking commercials? Man! Although it targets smoking, it makes me think about the long term effects of dipping. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted June 2, 2012 Super User Posted June 2, 2012 Used to dip skoal straight and Copenhagen long cut. For the better part of 8 years. Also chewed cannonball and days work during that time period. This was mainly all when I couldn't smoke. As for now, I only chew hog tails (or twist tobacco as some call it.) when I can get my hands on them. Which is maybe 6 times a year. I can generally get a week out of one. Quote

It sounds so stupid saying "I know", when clearly I'm the young, stupid, clueless one here, but I know. It will not be something I do my whole life, that's for sure. Turns out, I can't handle once or twice a day. I'm that kid that throws a lip in in the back of physics class and guts it the whole time. All of my friends think it's bad arse, and in the moment it's pretty funny. I've held ten minute conversations with teachers with a big lip in. I just don't want to keep feeding the money pit and always being anchored by a nicotine addiction. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted June 2, 2012 Super User Posted June 2, 2012 Does it help the gums more than dip? Chew is easier on the gums and lip. Quote
OHIO Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Chew is easier on the gums and lip. I might try to switch to chew to try and quit then. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted June 2, 2012 Super User Posted June 2, 2012 Haha, good luck. I thought I'd try the chew after I went 6 months without dip. I thought I could have a chew or two and not have the urge like I did with dip. WRONG. Chew is just as addicting. Quote
telmomarques Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 replace dip with 8 ball, its working for me Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted June 2, 2012 Super User Posted June 2, 2012 replace dip with 8 ball, its working for me I think you should switch 8 ball with mainlining heroin. Quote
Jake P Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 On a funny note. When i started training at my job 4 years ago, my buddy had already been there a while so we got stuck together. He is a lifelong dipper since 14. We went through a drive thru to get some lunch and he was eating and driving. My buddy drinks one kind of drink. Coke a cola in a bottle. He also spit sin only one kind of caintainer. An empty coca cola bottle. As you have probably already figured out, he got 2 big gulps of spit in before he realized what it was. He pulled over and threw up for ide say a GOOD 10 minutes. I will never dip because i am scarred by this experience LOL. 1 Quote

Revo_Carrot Stix Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 Cut the top 1/3 off a 2 liter bottle and then turn the top upside down back into the bottle. Duct tape it and you've got a spill proof spittoon...not to mention a cool science experiment after a month or so. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted June 3, 2012 Super User Posted June 3, 2012 My trainee accidently drank out of my spit cup the other day. Yea, he was hating me and life for about half hour. Quote

I'm always drinking and spitting into water bottles, so it's bound to happen. it really sucks, but I've never actually been dumb enough to swallow it. Quote
