Spook Help

I have never fished a spook before. I bought a few because I have been hearing how people have been catching a bunch of bass on them. I am going down Saturday to try them out. How exactly do you fish these? I know you have to make them zig zag, but any more in depth help would be greatly appreciated.

For me, a shorter rod is better than a longer rod. I have issues trying to fish a spook with anything over a 6 1/2 foot rod. A 6 foot rod is better. I have a 5 1/2 foot med/light pistol grip rod (unknown brand, Eagle Claw I think) that I think is ideal for this technique.

My issue is that after 20 or so minutes of spook fishing, my wrist is done for a while. I find spook fishing really tiring to my wrist so I don't do it all that often.

I can't really tell you when spook type bait is better than a popper or a buzz bait, cause I don't know. I just pick one and try it for a while. I wish I could tell you more about this kind of top water fishing, but like I said, I find it really a tiring after a while.

I do like them early in the morning and when the fish are in less than 15 feet of water throughout the day.

Even if the fish are on the bottom in 15 feet the cool thing about them is they will bring fish up from that depth and sometimes deeper.

I love these things, it wont take long to learn how to get them to walk, you just have to practice.

Basically it is just short jerks on slack line, the hard part is getting into a rythem in that you take up just enough line with the reel as you are making the movement. If you were to spend a couple of hours with it on the water you would get it down but check out a video or 2, it will give you an idea of what to do then go out and try it.

It was raining fairly good today, so I thought I would try the spook. I didn't figure it would get any results because there was a little wave action. A few people had told me that the water had to be really calm. I found out that it's not always the case. I had a bass slap at it and then a 2.5# came up looking for a kiss (I landed that one). At that moment my wife wanted me to go to the store so I didn't get to fish for a few hours. Hoped this helped.
