Traveler2586 Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 I had been in the old Greentop a number of times. I just went to the new store. If I had any complaint at all, it was missing the "feel" of the older, smaller, more cramped location. Don't get me wrong, it was better than most other much larger stores. Something was cool about the little store. X2, ya, it was a tightly packed family store. Quote
Bigbarge50 Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 With all that room i was hoping they would have an area with spooled reels and rods that you could try out...... think would be an amazing feature to a store Quote
russ8605 Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 i am glad to see them go the only thing i thought was worth while was there archery section. most people were very rude in there and no help what so ever. i went in there once looking for a holster for a new handgun and the clerk told me i am going to do what you will do so go look yourself. Super User Sam Posted December 8, 2012 Super User Posted December 8, 2012 Russ, years ago when commission was taken out of retail sales we no longer had true professional sales people. We now have "clerks" who could care less if you make a purchase or not. You will find this to be true when you go into various retail stores, many of which do not have a "sales staff" and it is up to you to locate the department, survey the merchandise, select what you want and take it to checkout. Customer service is poor to say the least and I understand what you said about Gander Mountain. The same can be said about Dick's Sporting Goods. And you are on your own at Academy in Louisiana. Bass Pro Shops tries to place fishing guys in the fishing department but they can do only what they can based on their employees. I asked a BPS saleslady in the fishing department for a specific product and she had no idea what I was talking about. So if you go to the Richmond BPS ask for Mike or Michael. There are seven "Mikes" at BPS so make sure you find the ones that fish bass tournaments. What makes Green Top so nice is that you can talk to guys who fish for bass and know their products, the waters, baits, where to fish, information on rods and reels, and the electronics guy knows and loves the electronics he is selling. Once the guys get acquainted with you they will open up and help you in any way they can. May I also suggest visiting Castaways in Chester and Hookers in Toano. The guys working there also fish and they know their products. One great place off the beaten path is Tackle Express. They have a store on West Broad Street and Midlothian Turnpike. Best prices on rods and reels in the city,. Ask for Craig and remind him that he really needs to go to the LSU crawfish boil before he dies. So it looks like we are on our own when it comes to making our purchases unless you go to one of the smaller tackle shops or Green Top. Now go out there and make the Bait Monkey happy!!!! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted December 9, 2012 Super User Posted December 9, 2012 Another place to check out in the Richmond area, mechcanicsville in particular is surfside bait & tackle. Great little shop with a pretty good selection of everything. As far as losing commission based sales staff I am ok with that.....I don't need someone trying to make a sale following me around and then having to make sure the right person gets the commission for my sale. I have to agree with that. IMHO, commission and knowledge of the subject don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. I don't care for commission sales simply because it is a conflict of interest. Quote
Bigbarge50 Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 I always thought greentop carriers a lot of lures a lot of other places do not carry. I am not a gun guy, so I would be ignorant about their selection there but fishing wise they seem to carry some brands and such that is even tough to find online. Quote
