bassin is addicting Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 i see where these are on sale for $55. would the 7ft MH be good for deep cranks? i can't fit the longer ones in my vehicle so it would have to be the 7ft one. i'm sure there are better (higher priced) rods. but for the money i've heard these are pretty good. and it looks like it will handle up to 1 ounce cranks like the Spro DD. would you recommend this? or not.. for deep cranking? thanks for any advice/feedback Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted May 31, 2012 Super User Posted May 31, 2012 For the price, the Crankin Stick is a good choice and on sale they're even better. They aren't the most sensitive rods or the lightest but they get the job done. The MH should be fine for deep cranks, I use a M powered rod for deep cranks without trouble. Casting distance may suffer a bit with the 7' rod but you shouldn't have any trouble at all, I fished a 7'MH crankbait rod for years and still do occasionally. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted May 31, 2012 Author Posted May 31, 2012 do you think the Med would be better than the MH? how accurate is the power rating for that rod?? does anyone know?? i want to be able to use the 1 ounce cranks. Quote
Revo_Carrot Stix Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I tried to fish 3/4 oz Bomber Switchback Shads M7 and D7's on 6'9" M Carrot Stix (parabolic) and it was tough. I bought a BPS Crankin' 7'6" MH - telescopic (which collapses to 7') to use for these heavier deep divers and it does it's job. I don't fish these big deep divers a lot, so I didn't want to spend a lot. At $55, I don't think you can go wrong. My only complaint is how the combo feels - cork power hump + reel = bulky! I couldn't fish it all day. I'm not sure if the 7' has a smaller power hump. If you palm your reel while cranking, you may take your reel to BPS to see how it feels. And I agree with KYWar - these aren't the most sensitve rods, even if you use fluoro. Quote
stkbassn Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I had one of these rods in 7'6 M/H and it wasn't bad at all. If I were buying a 7ft rod though, I'd be getting the Powell Diesel Glass from Tackle Warehouse. Powell makes top notch rods and this one at $70 is the best thing going anywhere near the price. It's much better than the BPS rod you're considering. Take a look at least before you make your decision. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 31, 2012 Super User Posted May 31, 2012 Medium Heavy works great at the 7-foot level. Great rod. Go for it!!!! Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted May 31, 2012 Super User Posted May 31, 2012 I use the 7'6" MH Crankin' Stick as my deep cranking rod. The power rating is accurate and I would recommend the MH for the heavier deep divers. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 31, 2012 Super User Posted May 31, 2012 The MH will work, I just got a 7' MH glass rod and it works on DD cranks as does my 6'10" MH Elite tech smallmouth. The medium powered cranking rods all take less power to make them flex, in other words they are to whippy but a MH has enough resistance. For those that like a really whippy action on a crankbait rod a long rod provide more leverage which makes it easier to work deep divers. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted May 31, 2012 Author Posted May 31, 2012 i kinda wonder about that "power hump" too. not sure how comfortable it would be. that Powell rod looks good but is only rated up to 3/4oz lures....not sure i want to exceed that by a full 1/4oz?? thanks for the replies.... i appreciate it... decisions...decisions.. Super User Goose52 Posted May 31, 2012 Super User Posted May 31, 2012 Regarding the "PowerHump" - I personally think it's gimmicky and unnecessary; BPS should ditch it and just have a clone of a Fuji ECS reel seat with a simple single diameter rear grip. Would look better, weigh a fraction of an ounce less, and perhaps cost them a few cents less. Having said the above, I have 10 BPS rods with the PowerHump and usually don't notice it's there. At most, I might think that the grip is a bit "fat" when I first pick it up, especially if I've just put down a rod with a conventional grip. I grip a BC rod with just the little finger behind the trigger, so only a portion of the heel of my hand is resting on the PowerHump - that's really the only contact point and after a few casts I don't notice it. I have medium-sized hands. YMMV Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted June 1, 2012 Super User Posted June 1, 2012 A longer rod really shines when throwing deep divers, so you can maximize each cast by keeping your bait in the desired zone the longest. I'd echo the comments above in recommending the MH version, and I'd also encourage you to look at the 7'6" version, which collapses down to about 6'6". Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted June 1, 2012 Super User Posted June 1, 2012 I never had a problem with the powerhump on my BPS rods, don't think it really does anything but it wasn't a hinderance. I happen to think the XPS reel seat is one of the most comfortable reel seats available. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted June 3, 2012 Super User Posted June 3, 2012 I have the MH 7' and use it for spinnerbaits. It works awesome with deep divers too. There isn't a better crank rod for the money than the Crankin' Stick. Quote
james 14 Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 I had the 7' 10" MH before my buddy put his knee down on the tip and broke it. I loved the rod and would have one for just about everything if I could. Quote
