Finally picked up some flouro to try on my Plastics rod. I heard alot of people use backing and just tie on 60 yards or so of flouro. If i do this, does the lbs test need to be equal? Im using 17 lbs flouro, can i use 12 lbs yo zuri? Also, do yall use a blood knot? Thanks in advance yall!

When I was fishing straight fluoro, I would do this. Saves lots of $ in the long run. I would put 50yds of Halo on at a time blood-knotted to whatever junk I had laying around for backer. Usually it would be 8# backer and 6# & 8# fluoro.

I use Berkley Big Game for my backer on bigger capacity reels. I do use the same test, but doubt that's a big deal. I use the uni-to-uni knot.

On smaller capacity reels like Core 50's, etc, I just fill them all the way up with FC, no backer.

The only place the pound test/diameter of the mono backing comes into place is in the knot you select. But even then, it's probably not a big deal since there's not a huge variety in the line thickness used in bass fishing. I use uni to uni knot for my backing and for fluoro leaders on my braid setups.

I got a spool of 12lb Berkley Big Game that I use as backing for my baitcasters. I've never fished this line, but I've heard very good things about it, especially for saltwater fishing. If it can handle the salt, it can handle bass. And I got 900 yards for something like 6 bucks so I'm not spending money on "premium" mono for backing.

I use High Vis Yellow has a backing... that way I know how close I am to the backing when I'm casting. If i get to the point I can see the yellow really well on a cast I know it's getting close to time to change out the line.

First off, if your gonna use a backing, dont use Yozuri. If you purchase YoZuri, you might as well spool your whole reel with it because that stuff is the best thing since sliced bread. Go get yourself some cheap junk mono or something. Secondly, if your reel will only hold say 80 yds of 17# fluoro, you might as well spool it straight.

Good plan - the knot and line difference should largely be irrelevant, because you should never be casting to the point of reaching that connection, nor have a fish be able to take you into the backing line IMO.

I use yo zuri exclusively. Only reason I said that is because I have bulk spools. I plan on using big game for backing.
