Jake P Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Ok, after hearing everyones recommendations for a cranking rod in another post in this forum i got to thinking. The Bps crankin stick is made specifically for cranking obviously. The rod specs according to BPS.com are all ml-mh with a f-xf tip. I have always used a Moderate action for anything with a treble hook. The crankin stick is almost identical to the tourney special in looks, just a different name and price tag. If it is offered in the same powers and actions and lengths as any other rod, what makes it a "cranking rod"? Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 28, 2012 Super User Posted May 28, 2012 It is a composite made rod, not all graphite. Fiberglass and composite rods will often have a fast taper but a moderate action. I know it is strange because normal graphite rods usually have the same action as taper but composite rods are different, maybe someone here with more knowledge can explain it better but the BPS crankin stick has a moderate action with a fast taper due to the composite construction. Super User Goose52 Posted May 28, 2012 Super User Posted May 28, 2012 As much as I like some of the BPS stuff, this is one of those times when I go "huh". I have no idea why they describe the action of these rods as fast to extra-fast. I have 4 of these rods - 6'ml, 7'ml, 7'6"m, and 7'6"mh. I find the power ratings to be mostly accurate for these 4 rods. But they all fish as "moderate" action - none feel like what you would normally call a fast or x-fast action on a regular graphite rod. My only complaints with the Crankin' Sticks is that I wish they would ditch the "Power-Hump" grip and go with a Fuji ECS clone, and they should change the hook-keeper over to the open-ended design like they use on some of their other rods. The loop-style keeper that they now use is too small, and too close to the blank, and you can barely get the #2 trebles from some of the larger cranks in the keeper without hitting the blank. Quote

Agreed 100%. Even with it's faults, it's still a great rod. Fantastic value, especially when you get them on sale. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted May 28, 2012 Super User Posted May 28, 2012 It has a slower action than the tourney special. Best cranking rod you can buy for the money IMO. I have two and love them. They are good for spinnerbaits and topwaters as well. Quote
