Super User clayton86 Posted May 28, 2012 Super User Posted May 28, 2012 I'v been eyeballing it for some time been hearing mixed reviews on it. I played with one in the store and loved it the wife said she was gonna buy me one for a coming home present but thats not for like 7-8 more months and there will be the 2013 models out by then. jeb2 Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 I have the 7:1 version of it. Been fishing it a couple of months now, so pretty much have the settings figured out for different situations. I have it on an NRX 853, loaded with 12# Invisx. It struggles with lighter baits, like 1/8 t-rigs, smaller senkos, etc. My Core 50 and Steez's handle those better, also on 3 power NRX's, same line. But to be fair, those all have upgraded bearings. I guess I should get some coming for the MGX to level the playing field. For 1/4oz and up, it works great. But it's use for those days when finesse baits are required is limited. Overall, I'd agree with the recent review over on tackle tour when they concluded "The Revo MGX may be built with finesse applications in mind, but we think it makes an even better general purpose casting reel.". I know you didn't ask, but if I were choosing amongest the 5 ounce class reels I mention above, I'd get another Core 50, personally. Does it all with no fuss and no muss. Great little reel. Quote
Pantera61 Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Unless you really need to save that additional ounce for something more essential for your time on the water, the Revo Premier is fine. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted May 28, 2012 Super User Posted May 28, 2012 If you do decide to get one check out ebay there about 100 bucks cheaper NIB Quote

Probably the very best bang for the buck on the market right now, especially as they're trying to blow out the current models right now to make room for the updated versions coming out in Sept. Just ordered Orange Seals for my MGX. Hopefully that will put it more on par with my Steez's and Core 50 for the lighter baits. Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted May 29, 2012 Super User Posted May 29, 2012 Just ordered Orange Seals for my MGX. Hopefully that will put it more on par with my Steez's and Core 50 for the lighter baits. That seems to be the upgrade of choice to really make the MGX perform. I've only played with a couple that have been tuned and upgraded. I have to say, I still prefer my tuned Core 50. But even mroe than that, I prefer my Pixy's for light applications. I just don't think the MGX is as refined as the other reels, it constantly feels rough. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 You might want to flush and relube the stock bearings before jumping right to replacing them. If nothing else it will give a more accurate picture what you stand to gain. 1 Quote
jeb2 Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I always flush and relube the bearings before the reel ever hits the water for the first time. I do it again at least twice a year. Good advice, though. Many bearings come from the factory soaked in heavy oil or grease. Flushing them can make a huge difference. Quote
jj'sbassinforfun Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I am hoping Abu(or should I say purfishing) brings the Alt to the USM. I liked the MGX, But it needs more pop/flash IMHO. Will have to wait until Icast 2012 to see. Quote
jtesch Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 I have the mgx and love it. I can back of all the cast controls and still let it fly with no problems. I can pitch 20 feet farther with the mgx than I can with my chronarchs. I have the revo sxhs and hate hate hate the reel so it took alot for me to drop 325 on the mgx but after using it i'm glad I did Quote
jeb2 Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Jeb--Let us know the difference it makes. Thanks Didn't make a huge difference. I think the bearings that come stock are probably ABEC 7's, too. It did improve it a little, and that's a good thing, but it's still not quite as easy to control in changing conditions as my Core 50 is. I still think the dual braking setup in the Premier is superior overall to the MGX system. So I'm going to be a little cautious about getting a new style Premier since they went to that system in those, too. Quote
