psuangler91 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I was fishing around noon this morning from shore on a small local lake and only caught a couple small ones on a fluke when I decided to throw a frog on the mats that are just off the bank. I forgot my line snips at home and couldn't cut through the braid on my frog rod to get the bait I had tied on off and the frog on so I decided I'd just put it on my mh set up with 12# mono... BAD IDEA!!! I threw about 15 casts when I finally got a bite about 30 yards away. I let the fish take it reeled in the slack and set the hook as hard as I could. My line broke about ten feet out and I was stuck fishless, frogless, and embarassed. Any ideas why my line broke so close to me? I guessed maybe a kink from a back lash or something. Anyway, I'll never make the mistake of using sub par tackle to fish a frog again. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted May 25, 2012 Super User Posted May 25, 2012 12# mono and heavy cover dont mix well. Problem solved Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted May 25, 2012 Super User Posted May 25, 2012 MONO? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? LOL !!! Oh well, everyday is a school day, take it, learn from it, and move on, the reason why it broke was most likely from the strong hook set, then the fight, you may have tried a little to hard to get the fish to you instead of letting it play out a little. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 25, 2012 Global Moderator Posted May 25, 2012 Probably a weak spot in your line, probably caused from fishing such light line in heavy cover. If it's heavy weeds I wouldn't even be worried about a little extra braid dragging in the water, fish will probably never see it anyways. If it's really bothering you just find a rock with a sharp/rough edge and pull the tag end back and forth across it a few times and it should cut it no problem so you don't have as much trailing. Guard rails or braided cables work great if you're by a parking lot or road. Quote
unionman Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 I always carry a pocket knife to cut my superline. Nothing else but sharp sissors will work well, which I have in a swiss army knife I always have in my tackle box just in case. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted May 27, 2012 Super User Posted May 27, 2012 put it on my mh set up with 12# mono... Any ideas why my line broke so close to me? Sounds like a stren problem Quote
psuangler91 Posted May 29, 2012 Author Posted May 29, 2012 yeah like i said i only used mono cause that was my only other option, won't even waste my time in the future. Quote

I have the same problem, not a fan of super lines but I like the hollow frogs. Since I stopped using braid the spros and snagprofs get collected in a bag. Quote
