Question About Topwaters

should i put spiltring or snap for topwater such as spooks, sammy, poppers or should i tie directely to the nose?

I tied directly to the nose. I use a 17# mono for my spook. Just make sure there is a bit of slack to the line as you pop it to get the walk down.

I tie direct to the lure, but there are some folks who like to use a snap. Just a personal thing I guess. Try both and see what gives you the action you desire and let us know.

I use a snap and connect it to a split ring or line tie, whatever's on the lure out of the box.

I always tie directly to the lure, I make a habit of checking my knot to make sure its pushed up on the eyelet so the nose of the bait is always up, giving the bait the best possible action. For poppers try a loop knot or a palomar knot so that the line doesn't get in the way of the action.

If you use a snap make sure it isn't heavy enough that it drags the nose of the bait down. I tie direct to my topwaters.

Two chains of thought on this subject.

The first is to tie your line directly to the topwater as it gives the bait a more natural look and action.

The second is to use a snap.

I use snaps in tournaments when I want to change out the baits fast and efficiently.

I tie to the topwater directly when fun fishing.

Some topwaters, like the Pop-R, make it difficult to attach a snap due to the construction of the lure and the location of the eye.

Personal preference. It is up to you to decide which way to go based on your catch ratio using both methods and your confidence factor.

I tie direct, older Zara Spooks get a split ring added and so does the Rattlin chug bug. I did experiment the use of a split ring on a popper and I didn't like it and I tried the loop knot and din't like it so the popper gets a palomar knot tied direct. The baits that benefit from a split ring or loop knot are walking baits, on poppers I thing it makes them a little more subtle and I consider the chug bug as a walking bait. I don't like snaps at all especially on a topwater bait.

It depends on the topwater. Walking baits like the Spook or even Pop-R, I put a split ring on the lure and tie to it. But for all other topwaters, I tie direct to the lure with no split ring. Recently, I am using oval split rings.

I tie directly to spooks and my heddon hula popper came with a split ring. i've only caught 5 bass on the spook but i found something that helps with walking-the-dog technique. i tie 8ft of 30lb braided line to my 12lb mono. the braided line gives it that slack that's needed. plus my mono was being eaten up from lure up (about a foot). with the braided line i eliminated that problem.
