thinking of playing some football with the bass this evening. i was watching vids on youtube, so you basically throw it out and let it craw it slowly over the bottem. Like you would a C-rig. i got a few 3/4 oz ones last nite in the basic colors, i converted my longer pitchin stick to do this, So it is a 7'6 H rod, with a a PQ 7 gear and about 50 lb braid on it, will that do?

any tips on how you do your is greatl appreciated

your rod, reel, and line should be just fine but if the water is a bit clear you could run a fluoro leader, not necessary cus i dont really think the fish care but you can do so. for your retrieve, yea make a long cast and let the jig sink to the bottom, strip line off your reel so the jig falls straight down not at a pendulum torwards you. once it hits bottom, take up all the slack, put your rod tip low, start a slow steady sweep. i usually drag it about a foot then pause, take up slack, then do it again. you can drag it more than a foot or less and you can drag it fast if you want, just let the fish tell you how they want it.

One tip I follow is that when a crayfish moves, it makes two quick movements as an escape instict, then sort of freezes. So after the jig hits bottom, let it sit for 15 to 20 seconds, then give your rod tip two short taps before a slow retrieve for a few seconds. Then let the jig sit for 15 seconds, then repeat the two taps/tugs of the rod tip and repeat the process back to the boat/shore.

There is a good video in the video section that does a much better job of explaining that I could ever do.

Good luck

I usually use a stout medium heavy rod and 14lb to 17lb copoly when fishing football jigs off points in 12' of water or less, if I'm fishing deeper than that I'll use 30lb braid. Your set up is fine, and you got the idea, a slow crawl with a hop or two in between pauses and when you feel it stick on a rock that is when you just give it small pulls, it will make the jig rock in place and it often draws strikes. If you are looking for locations the first place I go is the points, and most of the time it is the secondary points I hit first, they go untouched a lot of times and they hold fish just as good as main lake points.

Tip #1 Only bring your jig rod and Jigs.

Tip #2 Only use a Rage crawl or lobster as a trailer. (I'd start with Green Pumpkin and a somewhat matching jig)

Tip #3 Pay close attention to tip 1&2 and hang on!!!

Play with your retrieves a little. Sometimes short hops work, sometimes you want to drag it. Trailers can make a difference. Sometimes they seem to like lots of action like a Rage Craw or twintail grub, sometimes something with less action like a salt craw or craw papi works better.
