Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 23, 2012 Super User Posted May 23, 2012 Ratios for various applications aren't written in stone. However, many feel a 5.?:1 is a good ratio for deep crankbaits or crankbaits in general. A few even like in the 4s for deep crankbaits. A lot like a 7.?:1 for any technique that requires getting the lure back to the boat in a hurry for the next cast. Wouldn't that be just about everything? A 6.?:1 is considered a good all-around ratio. All of this can be found by searching. Hope your luck is better at it than mine usually is. LOL I'd opt for a 7.?:1 ratio reel for the 7' MHF as you probably will be using it for such techniques as jigs and spinnerbaits. I'd put a 6.?:1 on the 7'MM, Your choices for the spinning rod are wide open. Some of my 7' MHF rods are a Techna AV (used only), Cumara, Falcon Original, Airrus Ultra XT (used only). The most expensive was the Cumara...used at $5 over your limit. I've seen them used for less than your maximum. I'd suggest a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth spinning rod if you can accept a length other than 7'. Check out reviews by smalljaw and others. I bought 2 based on reviews, but haven't fished locally yet this year. SUX. My Dick's Sporting Goods has the Tec Spec Elite on sale until Saturday. Buy one, get one 50% off. $120 for 2 ain't bad. The regular Tec Spec gets good reviews for its price range. I like the looks of the Elite series. Academy's Ethos series also get good reviews. There are plenty of good rods in your range....especially if willing to buy used. Good luck with your purchases. Be safe and thanks for your service. Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted May 24, 2012 Super User Posted May 24, 2012 7MHF: St Croix Avid (Memorial Day sales will make it in your range) 7MM: Abu Veritas MMF (reaction baits so you don't need a lot of sensitivity- can be found for ~$80) 7MXF: St Croix Legend Tournament (6'9" MLXF- Croix's fish a little heavier)- last year's model on sale @SC $161 PQ's are great reels at that price point. Thanks for your service and enjoy those new rods when you get back. Quote
Stasher1 Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 You may want to check out the Carbonlite rods while you're at BPS picking up your PQs. They're super light and run ~$100 depending on length. They don't have a 7' MXF spinning, but they do have a 6'8" MXF and a 7' MF. Quote
21farms Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 7 Foot MHF Casting Rod used g.loomis MBR-843C IMX (takes a little bit of searching and waiting but you can get one for $150) paired with a BPS PQ 7.1:1. a fantastic, super versatile rod you can use for almost anything. 7 Foot MM Casting Rod abu-garcia 7' medium/moderate-fast veritas. pair it with a 5.2:1 BPS PQ for all of your cranking needs. 7 Foot MXF Spinning rod here, i'm not too familiar with many 7' M/XF rods but i like your choice of XF. i guess i'd go with a 6'8" carbonlite rod in M/XF. i also don't know about the BPS spinning reels...but, at that price range, i think you'd be hard-pressed to do better than a 2500-size shimano symetre. use this combo for dropshotting, shakeyheading, dartheads, splitshotting, small tubes and grubs. good luck. Capt.Bob Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Avid, Avid, and Avid, easy enough, seriously, I like my Legends better but for $150.00 bucks a piece you can find like new used avids in every rod you mentioned with a little time and effort, a little more searching and if you keep your eye's open you can find em new, you have plenty of time and like I said I preffer my Legends, but I know the Avids are a bigger bang for the buck, and the best buy dollar for dollar of any rod!!! Good luck on your deployment, I think I speek for all--THANKS Quote
