Bigbassboy123 Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I recently ordered a Abu Garcia revo sx and Ive nevered owned a bait caster before and I hear they are a big trouble if you don't set them up properly. I was just wondering what pound line and and size lures and how I should set the magnets for certain baits. Quote
elkriverangler Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 To setup the SX for different Lures, First set the Magnet to the off position then adjust the Cast Control until the Lure starts to fall very slowly then set the Magnetic Control. I would recommend if you are just starting out with Baitcasters that you set the Magnet about halfway or a touch more. Once you get used to the Reel you should be able to set it to around a third of the way on and not have any Backlash problems Just be sure to repeat the process when you change Lures. You will like the SX once you get used to it. Quote
Bigbassboy123 Posted May 23, 2012 Author Posted May 23, 2012 Thanks. I'm kind of unsure right now about this bait caster but well find out thursday how I like it. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 The amount of mag braking you need depends on conditions such as wind as well as the weight and profile of the bait. You'll need to educate your thumb as well. The SX is a nice casting reel but is not the most user friendly for a beginner. Quote
21farms Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 the way elkriverangler described it is the way the SX owners manual says to do it too and is generally the way you would do it with most of baitcasters out there. HOWEVER, me and many other SX owners will tell you that you'll have better luck tightening the cast control knob until the lure only starts to fall when you give the rod a little shake. the most important thing to remember about casting with the SX is to use a smooth and fluid casting motion and be consistent with every cast. since you're just starting out, i'd recommend starting with the magnets set all the way. i'd also highly recommend the "masking tape trick". strip out as much line as you think you'll make on your longest cast, pull out an additional 10-15 feet, and then put a piece of masking tape over the remaining line on your spool and wind all the line back on. that way, when you birdnest, your tangle won't go deeper into your spool beyond the tape. good luck. Bigbassboy123 Posted May 23, 2012 Author Posted May 23, 2012 Thanks for the replys but when you say the "cast control knob". Are you talking about the knob on the side that the reel shaft is or the other side. And when you say that I should start with the magnets all the way, do you mean to set the the magnets on the max setting? Quote
BobP Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Yep, the cast control knob is the little knob right beside the handle. Max magnets is fully clockwise (highest numbers). I'd suggest 12 or 14 lb monofilament line. No sense putting expensive fluorocarbon or braid on there until you get beyond the learning stage. You will find it easier to learn casting if you use 1/2 to 3/4 oz lures when starting out. When guys used to using spinning rods first start with baitcasters, I see lots of backlashes caused by trying to throw too hard. Like 21farms says, baitcasting depends on a consistent fluid casting stroke that loads up the rod tip. With a good set-up on the reel, it doesn't require much rod tip speed or a gigantic casting arc to get good casts from a baitcaster. I use an SX and set the cast control knob so that the lure will drop when I dip the tip of the rod, which is slightly tighter than "normal" in which you are told to set it so the lure begins slowly dropping to the ground when you hit the spool release. I also set the magnetic cast control about half way. That's enough control for consistent casts without having to worry about thumbing the reel or backlashing, if your casting strokes are good. I think the SX is actually one of the easiest and most consistent baitcasters to learn on. I think you'll like it. Quote
Bigbassboy123 Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 I just got tot today and put a 1/2 sinker on it just to practice out in the yard and I have only had a couple minor back lashes. So far I think I am doing alright and at the rate I am going, I think I'll be pretty well used to it by the weekend. I appreciate all the feed back. Quote
FishingWonderboy89 Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 Hi. I have had a revo sx for a while now but am struggling to pair it with a decent rod. Any reccomandations on rod to pair with? I don't see many posts about this reel.. hence my question posted here! Mostly saltwater bass fishing in the UK so needs to have stainless eyelets. Quote

Basically everyone is north america (mostly USA) and fishing for freshwater bass. The rods you can get in the UK are very different and you're talking saltwater bass which is a different animal yet. In generic terms, you'll want to look for a moderate fast action rod rated somewhere 1/4-2 oz. Something like the wychwood agitator 7' 10-40g (3/8-1.5oz) is the right size if that's the weight range of lures you're throwing. 1 hour ago, roadwarrior said: What does that mean? Are you asking about sea bass? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_bass yes, that's what he'll be talking about. In some parts of the UK you can fish the beaches for them reasonably well. Not sure where wonderboy is but when I lived in East yorkshire there were plenty of beaches that held them. Think small stripers in the surf and you'd be pretty close. Quote

Check out Major Craft rods at Tackle Wave in the UK. They have a ton of salt water rods, for seabass. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted July 17, 2023 Super User Posted July 17, 2023 My Revo flings them. I have the mag about 3/4 to “whoa!” And my spool is tighter than usual. I like the description about wher I need to jiggle the bait to get it to drop. OP. A sinker alone flies differently from a bait. Proceed cautiously. Quote
