The fisherman's one I don't even bother going to on the weekends unless I get there early since it usually fills up, the memorial beach ramp I don't go to period during the summer because of what they charge you. Quote

KenP Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 Did Webster Lake on father's day morning. Launched from the south ramp at 530am with no issues. Probably the best fishing day of my life. Got a 5 and a 6 and lost another as he bent the hook out. As others have mention bite completely died at about 11am. Wachusett Reservoir has been seriously slow. A few nice smallies here and there the past few weeks but they seem to be still playing post spawn since they had length but were very skinny. I skunked a few times and watched a bald eagle ****** something from a good ways out on the surface. Bait fish are busting on the surface a good ways out.  I spent last weekend on Lake Champlain. Great smallie action even with the crazy fathers day derby they just had and a large bass tourney happening. Seen my first sheepshead, definitely a very strange looking fish. Lots of big fat white and yellow perch in between the smallies. Had a northern on for a few seconds but he made quick work of my 15lb leader.  I want to get out on Quabbin soon. Was going to stop by and get a smallie on my way back from VT but my old man would not have any part of my shenanigans. 2 Quote

Say....September.  I was with you until the "no sonar" part, that might as well be suicide out there if you ask me.  Conditions were good on Sunday, I stared off the morning on fire boating 12 fish in the first hour.. then my partner was sick to his stomach, had to run him back to the car so he could rest for a while, definetly threw the mojo off as I struggled to catch much for the next few hours, methodically working a drop shot in my typical locations.. produce a few bites but not what I was expecting or hoping for.  My partner rallied and then we fished for a few more hours and caught a few more each.  I ended the day with around 20 smallies, mostly in the 2lb range, nothing of real size.  Biggest I landed was 3.5, lost one that looked bigger when I didn't have a partner to net it.  Caught them all around 12-20 feet, on various techniques... my post productive was dragging a jig.  Water temps were 74-76.   Heres a picture of the 3.5    Quote

I had an unforgettable day there last summer with a 4.8, 4.4 and probably 15 other bass in the 2-3lb class. Most coming on topwaters. Quote

KenP Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 @Janderson45Â Looking at your last Quabbin rental boat pic. Do you mount a portable GPS/Sonar to the trolling motor you have on the side? Quote

Do you mount a portable GPS/Sonar to the trolling motor you have on the side?  Yes it's a transom mount trolling motor and it has a lowrance HDI transducer mounted on the bottom of it.  In the past I also used a portable suction cup mount for the transducer, but can't say I recommend it, I just made it work for a while.  They also sell clamp on brackets for mounting a transducer that I've seen people use. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted July 2, 2017 Super User Posted July 2, 2017 I had a 50th birthday dinner at the Monoponsett Inn at 6:00 yesterday so I dropped into Monoponsett Pond (West) with Evan, my wife's friend's son who I've mentioned before, about 3:00 yesterday.  It was very windy, but we went for it.  Evan didn't catch anything and I managed two decent Larry's and lost one on a 4" wacky rigged Senko.  Surprisingly, Fishing Rhino's secret weapon didn't produce more than little tap-taps from panfish.  The weather was a bag of everything and surface temps started at 80.x and dropped to 76.x by the time we had to leave.  Evan got discouraged and went back the launch, but I coaxed him back out.  He's 17, stuck on hard baits and switches every few casts if they don't produce.  He's seen me catch bass on soft baits a few times and is now willing to give them a try.  I told him to bring two rods next time, one with his favorite hard bait and the other with ONE soft bait.  If we fish Ponkie it'll be a T-rigged worm and a wacky Senko if we fish a deeper/open pond.  All in all a good day, but have to work on getting Evan a couple fish before Summer is over.  On a side note, it might be time for another lunch meet to discuss a group fishing trip to ????? Janderson45 Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Was out at the Q again today with my typical fishing partner Joe.  We had relatively high expectations based on our outing on monday, but they never panned out for us.  It was a real grind out there.  We fished and fished hard for the full 12 hours out there, last boat off the water  At the end of the day we had boated 15 total.  I had 9 but four  of them were complete dinks, he had six, mostly in the 1-1.5lb range.  End of the night saved us, I caught 3 good ones (good ones for today anyways) between 6:15-6:45PM and i beleive he landed two more in that time as well.  We both did lose a handful of fish; spitting a dropshot while going airborne was the majority of it.  I did catch my first ever Quabbin largemouth as well, it ate my jig in 20-25 feet of water surrounded by smallies... weird.  Also had a serious bite mark from what we think was a lake trout ??  We also considered a bird but don't think a loon would attack a largemouth and I don't think it would've gotten away from an eagle nor where they puncture marks like an eagles talons would leave.  Water temp was 74-77, winds were WNW and got gusty and higher than forecasted in the afternoon.  Mostly sunny with air temp hovering around 85-90 most of the day.  Fishcwere caught at a wide range of depths from 12 to 35+ feet.  I couldn't help but find myself losing a fair deal of confidence out there, unless it's early early season I have spots that consistently produce for me and they just weren't happening today for whatever reason.  Marked a lot of fish laying on the bottom either by themselves or with one or two other bass in 25-35 feet of water.  They seemed very sluggish and reluctant to feed which surprised me.  Where we found any sort of sustained success were the few times  we came across groups or schools of clearly more active bass, they were roaming a few feet off of the bottom in about 20-25 feet of water instead of laying on the bottom in deeper water.    Yes I'm wearing the exact same outfit as Monday... lol   Up early again tomorrow to go striper fishing, hopefully with better results than our smallie expedition today. ? 1 Quote

RMcDuffee726 Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Went Striper fishing  @ Sandy Point State Reservation.  We arrived at 5:10AM and were fishing till 12PM.  The bite was slow, but we did have some luck.  Using chopped mackerel and letting it set on the edge of the rip seemed to do the trick.  If I had to guess, I would say the bait was sitting in the water for 30-45 min before getting bit (this was consistent for all 3 fish).  It should be noted that if you would like to do this, you need to get to the parking lot for the state reservation really early.  By 10AM the parking lot was busy fu***** jammed.  People were getting turned around left and right.  Other than that, it was a great day.  Here are two of the three fish that were caught.  All the fish caught would have kept too.  Quote
Janderson45 Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Those don't look like keepers to me??  Legal size is 28".  Glad you had fun and caught a few though.  we got our commercial limit (15 fish minimum 34") out around Provincetown yesterday... wasn't as easy as we envisioned but we grinded from 4:30 am -2:30 am until we had a limit.  Ferocious and fast paced top water action in the AM and then live lining mackerel or vertical jigging as we got into the afternoon.  Lots of short fish mixed in, probably caught 20 or so shorts.  Had a blast though, was my first time fishing commercial striped bass.  My buddy took a bunch of pics and video, when he sends it over to me I'll post a bit of it. Quote
