Arrived a little late at the Quabbin (7AM) gate 43.  I have been fishing that place for 30yrs and have never seen water level so low.  Launch went well, boat fired right up and down the lake we go.  Get about a 1/2 mile out and the motor dies.  After having gone over everything yesterday at the house and installing a brand new battery for the bow mount to say I'm just a little a PO'd would be an understatement.  So it was stay close to the ramp and use the TM, managed 2 smallies one pushing 4 and the other at 2.5 and a few dinks.  Put the boat back on the trailer and headed home at 1:30.  Pulled the cover and changed the gas filter and some fresh gas still no go.  Called the shop and in she goes tomorrow AM.   Hopefully nothing to serious, and I'll be back at it later this wk.

Yeah I looked for you but didn't see you obviously.  We were on the water for 645 or so, you may have passed us on the water after you launched though as we tried a bit of topwater near the launch early in the AM.

We fished until 4:30, and we ran all over the reservoir... didn't do much better than you.  Boated 8 fish all day, 6 for me, 2 for my partner, he did catch the big fish of the day at 3-1 however.

5 of my fish were on a dropshot in the same location in a 30 minute window.  The other one was on a ned rig.  All of them caught in 20-25 feet of water give or take.  The big fish of the day was on a cheap Walmart looking flutter spoon in fire tiger right before we got off the water.. Go figure.

I don't know what was up, I marked lots of suspended fish and had a terrible time tempting any of them to bite, threw a bunch of different jerk baits at them, vision 110, shadow rap, lucky craft pointer, rapala floaters..  flukes and soft plastic swimbaits, Ned rig, tubes, dropshot.. No luck lol.  Finally started hitting a few fish on a dropshot after the cloud cover cleared and winds died...  shouldn't it be the other way around?

its been a very good year for me!

No kidding... Seems like you've got the whole night fishing thing down..  I need to take notes.. Can't get comfortable fishing in the dark for some reason, I feel very handicapped not being able to see where my bait is or line is... Plus I still haven't figured out exactly what I should be throwing.  I've read all the articles, black spinnerbait, big worms, top waters, still haven't really had much luck fishing over an hour or so past sundown.

Hit Ponkie yesterday at dawn.  Pulled in a 2-4 on the first cast on a 5" weightless Senko.  My 5" Zoom and perch whopper plopper helped out for the next couple hours getting four more small bass and five pickerel.  Traffic slowed by 9:00 when little Bluegill and Perch were the only ones nibbling at my baits.  Had a quick install so I bailed around 10:00.

I met Evan, my wife's friend's son who's beating Lukemia, at Sunset Lake in Braintree with his new fishing kayak around 5:00.  I bagged a small pickerel, not much bigger than my Whopper Plopper straight away.  I had two really good 'almosts' with Fishing Rhino's secret weapon. The first loss was either a knot failure or a bite through and the second was a spit.  Evan caught a small bass on a chartreuse crankbait.

By 6:30 the weather turned cold and windy which seem to shut the bite off.  We bailed around 7:00 when the pond looked more like open ocean.

Congratulations to Swamp Hawgs on a stellar year.  I agree with Janderson45: you're tuned in and I need to take notes....

Hit up whitehall around 6am today. Right off the bat my dad got a blow up on his whopper plopper but the fish (not sure whether it was a pickerel or bass) missed it completely. Unfortunately that was the only sign of fish we would see for about the next 4 hours...I was pretty beat and frustrated so I took a break in the back seat and began to doze off, about 20 minutes into a nap my dad sets the hook and says "got one" and I probably have never woken up faster haha. It was a nice 3.4 largemouth. I get back to fishing, and about 20 minutes later he gets another one, probably a little under 2 lbs. Clearly nothing I'm doing is working so I was switching it up between spinnerbaits, swimbaits, chatterbaits, crankbaits, topwaters....nothing.

We zoomed over to the dam area and start going up one of the shores. I had a wiggle wart tied on and was trying to get it to dive just to the top of the weeds. The wind made for a few backlashes, and I never thought I would say this...but a backlash saved the day for me. I cast upwind with the wiggle wart and I backlash immediately, the thing landed about 15 feet from the boat in front of me and I spent about 20 seconds getting the backlash out. When I reeled in the line, as soon as I got tension on the lure again and it began to move, I see a bass come up and inhale it! It was so close and it startled me, we netted it pretty quick, not much of a fight given how close it was. Weighed in it 5.04, my second biggest this year! I doubt I would have caught it had I not backlashed and the lure landed where it did.

With big ones in the area apparently I decided to spend some time devoted to swimbaits (8" line throught trout). I did have something follow it in and try and swipe at it as I reeled it out of the water on one cast, I didn't get a good look at it unfortunately. That was the only action on the swimbait though, around 2 we decided to call it quits.

Launched at Ponkie after work yesterday.  Got there about 5:45 and stayed until dark.  I didn't have much with me, so I started with a clear Heddon Torpedo and weightless 5" swim Senko.  It was pretty slow.  Nothing on the Senko and a small bass, about a pound, on the torpedo.  I left my Lowrance control head at home, but the water temp was noticeably cooler.  Not cold enough to require boots, but in the mid 60's for sure.

Even though it was slow, the highlight was a nice bass jumped clear out of the water trying to get the torpedo just as the sun had set so I saw silhouette against the sunset's reflection off the glass clear water.

fished 6am-midnight saturday. fished RI  went saltwater fishin, tough fishin we caught a few sea bass, short togs and one blue. we hooked into a big striper.   at noon we came back in and i went bass fishin! i pounded a pond for a few hours. i lost a tank here a few weeks ago, this is a big pond but the water level is so low the bass are stacked up in one little deep portion.  i missed 2 good fish and caught a little 2lbser. continued fish and exploring new ponds. lost another good fish at 8pm on a swimbait.
kept driving around looking for new spots!  hit a 2 bog ponds. caught one dink on a 9inch bait at around 930 or so. called it quits at midnight.

sunday i fished a new pond been wanting to check out. deep deep woods. hiked a mile in. caught a chunky bass just shy of 4lbs on a jig!  fished 2 other ponds ive fished many times before. had one big blow up at sundown on a 3ounce jitter bug!

Looks like my MA fishing days are over until spring. I picked up a project in St. Petersburg FLA which carries me until Thanksgiving and potentially to the holidays. I'm looking to ship a rig and some tackle to check out some holes here.

Since we're running out of wet fishing season here I got over to Ponkie after work again tonight. Armed with a black/yellow Whopper Plopper, a red/gold/black spinner bait and my 5" U-Tail. Water temps were 67.x

The Whopper Plopper was the most popular, netting be one bass and two picks.

Anyone been fishing on Cape Cod lately? I'll be fishing there next Saturday 10/08. Driving up from Maryland for my fall getaway. Any patterns or updates leading up to them will be greatly appreciated. I've always had good luck this time of year there. Jigs, spinnerbaits, bottom baits and jerkbaits. Supposed to be a lot of rain down there from now till next Friday.

It's funny how it's like that, some get bit more than others. Some days they won't bother me, other days I can't keep them off. My dad always seems to get bit. I've heard things like medication or diet can affect how much they "like" you. 100% deet sure does the job but I don't like using that stuff anymore than I have to.

That would be fun...can I post that here or do I need to post in the Southeast Forum? :)

You'd HAVE TO post it here.  With the Patriots playing, Sox in the playoffs, and the Bruins in preseason, who'd take time to find your post anywhere else?

Hello everyone,

I am from Texas and temporarily moved to Plymouth for work for the next 12 to 18 months.  I am an avid bass fisherman and am sure glad I found this site.  I left my boat in Texas and plan to bring it up here next spring assuming that I can find a place to store it.  By reading through these threads, I cannot wait to get out on some of these bodies of water.  Hopefully, I will survive my first New England winter and maybe do some ice fishing.  I am looking forward to talking all things related to bass fishing.

Thanks,

Jay

Hi Jay !

And welcome to this site,... and New England.  You are fortunate enough to be in Plymouth as (I beleive) there are some of the better Massachusetts waters there. And the canal is close for stripers,... (which will be gone soon) If you have any questions you can PM me.

 Keep ya line wet!

Hi Jay,

You are in a great area for every type of fishing that New England offers. Especially being a stones throw from Cape cod. If there is a cold enough winter down there were there is safe ice; watch out. Great trout and bass fishing through the ice. Enjoy the 4 seasons while your there. I live in Maryland now. But, Massachusetts will always be home!
