Thinking of doing a cape trip this upcoming weekend. I already have a spot for some kayak fishing but temps look a little low. Anyone got any recommendations/ideas for fishing the cape first week of May?

Hey , Bass slayer I live in Dennis area on the cape . Your correct about the temps , they have been on the cool side . If you do decide to take a trip down here I would suggest hitting West Reservoir. It is located in Harwich off of Bells Neck road . I have pulled many a nice bass out of there back when I used to kayak.

By kayak, I’d recommend Snake pond in Sandwich, Hinckley’s and Sheep in Harwich/Brewster.

Cape Cod is full of kayakable waters. Just pick one and go for it.

I fished Mash-Wake and Santuit yesterday. Waters were 56.x & 58.x, respectively.  There are some beds too.

Good luck.

Got out on webster. Managed 7 or 8 but never really felt like we were on them. No big ones but they were all fat fish. Jerkbaits, tailspin and a blade bait did the damage. Also got one on the MDC crankdown perch that was probably only slightly bigger than the bait itself ?

Glad to hear. @JG233 and I were there last week or so and couldn’t buy much of anything.  Seems like reaction baits are the only thing working as of late.

I wasn't satisfied and driving by my home lake this evening after dinner I saw some sunfish activity at the surface as the wind died and it was slick calm with the sunset. I felt the tug on my heartstrings and knew I had to try again, it just felt right. Went for a shore mission with one bait tied on, a Monka Crawler. Fished a roadway that splits two coves that are both key spawning areas.

The last hints of sunlight were on the horizon as I made my first few casts. Frogs were croaking up a storm and the stars were coming out with a slick clam surface. It was cool but not uncomfortable and just so peaceful. If you've never fished a crawler they cast like a missile and the retrieve is pretty slow. It can take 5 minutes to bring the bait back in. So on my 3rd or 4th cast I just kind of closed my eyes it was so peaceful out to take it all in and BOOM. I felt and heard the hit and swung. Not a moment I'll forget for a long time. Fish went 5.6 and is my biggest so far this year. I stuck it out a couple more hours and bagged 5 more fish including a 3.4 and a few other decent ones. Missed one that I think I foul hooked.

Night fishing in April is new ground for me but I see guys do well at night pretty much anytime it's not frozen.

Got out again today, not much action but I got a couple solid ones on a jig under some docks, 2.5 and 3.5. Had to put my skipping skills to the test for both of them. Gonna try and get out from shore again tonight.

This passed weekend's trip to Cape Cod was semi-productive.  I fished Mashpee-Wakeby, Long Pond, Santuit, and Wequaquet.  I took a skunk at M-W and LPH.  Santuit coughed up one LMB and two picks.  @JG233 and I spent Sunday at Wequaquet, which was a pickerel fest, though I managed one small LMB on a jerkbait early in the morning and a small SMB late in the day on a drop shot.

I saw only one bed at LPH.  Nothing else at the other waters.

Reaction baits, Ned, and drop shot produced most of the fish, and I thew the kitchen sink everywhere.  I had a few decent picks, but overall size was small.

Winds Friday and Saturday were tough.  Sunday was beautiful.  Air pressure was 29.9 Friday and rose to 30.1 by Sunday afternoon.  Water temps were 56.x at LPH and M-W, and 58.x at Santuit and Wequaquet.

Last nights shore mission was a swing and a miss. Strange wind out of the south might have had something to play in it but who knows.

Weird weather coming up. Decided to delay my cape trip until next weekend - looks a little cold and windy. Gonna warm up big time next week

Did a bit of salt and freshwater yesterday. Got a schoolie and a big windowpane flounder. Missed 2 other stripers. Then I went bass fishing, had a few good whacks. Missed a big fish on the giant wooden jitterbug.

I couldn't believe the bluegill activity today with all the black flies. The entire lake was slick calm but you could see ripples across the whole lake from a non-stop bluefill feast. I would have thought the bass would be taking full advantage and ambush some of them but I couldn't buy a bite on anything bluegill colored. Wouldn't touch a jig or swimbaits on top either.

Saw the same thing! Put in a couple hours shore fishing at a local reservoir and landed my first bass of the year on a wacky rigged senko in deep water. Put up a great fight.

I fished Ponkapoag late yesterday afternoon.  Two small LMB and a handful of picks.  One bass ate a Falcon Lake Craw Rage Bug and everyone else took a bluegill Rapala Skitter Walk.

The highlight was seeing an Osprey take a bluegill out of the water in front of me.

The bass bite's been tough lately.  They must be 'resting up' for the spawn.  Most catches lately have been on reaction baits.

Water temps at Ponkie are 60.x - 61.x.  Air pressure was 29.9.

I think the warm weather late next week is going to turn things on. Unfortunately by then I'll be on a plane heading back overseas. Hopefully I catch a strong summer bite when I'm back. Until then, good luck all!

Thanks, and we'll get out on the Ranger then.

80s into the weekend should get things going for sure. Lots of places been hovering in the mid 50s for weeks now. Should finally get the water temps into the 60s. I'ts been kinda slow my last few times out. Feels like the fish are in a waiting pattern. I did see a smallie on a bed last time it hit 70. I think they usually get a head start on the largies.

I am looking forward to it as well! I went in couple of times and the bass didnt seem committed. I was using senko and ned rig. Fish pull at it but lightly. Lot of bluegills however, but I'd like bass please!

Got out today on Thr Nip. Foggy in the morning and tons of surface activity. Turned out to be mostly pickerel pushed up into the shallow weeds just blitzing sunfish and shiners. Got some good ones a couple just shy of a pin. One had an 8" golden shiner freshly eaten down it's throat. The bass came later but didn't seem to want to come to the surface. Did most of my damage on a jig. No dinks they were all quality fish but nothing much over 3lbs. Got 8 bass in total.

Headed out again tomorrow not sure where yet.

Fished Quinsig today, temperature was all over the place with the warming trend. I saw as low as 59 in the main lake and 71 in shallows. Did pretty good, got 15 bass on a variety of baits but mostly a jig and spinnerbait. A few dinks but overall pretty decent fish. Biggest one fell to the spinnerbait and went 4.23lbs. Missed a few other fish here and there.

Feels like we skipped straight to summer!

Took my first trip down to the cape this year and struck out with stripers in Buzzards Bay - just no activity to speak of. Then switched over to John’s Pond and got a decent smallie on a senko flipping rocks up shallow. Windy as hell today. Saw a massive school of herring too. Looking forward to getting back at it next weekend

I'm picking the boat up this weekend and I'm hearing that schoolie stripers are in some of the inlets and rivers. Hoping to get the mooring situated early so I can go chase a few of the striped variety.

It was a great evening yesterday. 150k sea robins, 5 weakfish, a striper and a fluke.  Best weakfish bite I’ve been on.

Nice night. Caught a bunch including this 5.1.IMG_6694.thumb.JPG.f20d45b6b5f5b186cae4cb704f542d03.JPG

Welcome change not to be knocked around by the wind.
