Dropped by Ponkie late this afternoon.  It was sunny and warm, but windy like Cape Cod was last week.  I gave it a go for about an hour and a half.  Coming off a 32 hour shift and the wind took all my gusto.

I lost something on a Ned due to knot failure and another something spit my T-rigged Kreature.  Both felt like pretty good fish.  Water temps showed 72.x until my battery died.  Vegetation is also in full bloom.  Topwater and T-rigged are the best options here until the fall.

The rest of the week is busy, but I've penciled in a trip to Westport with Fishing Rhino.  I'm very much looking forward to it.

Traveled south this morning to Westport to meet up with Fishing Rhino.  Launched about 7:30 to bright skies and a steady 10MPH breeze.  We were on fish within the first 1/2hr and for about an hr we caught 12 fish with Toms 3.5 LM taking honors.  The wind increased to 15 and the fishing slowed considerably.   We headed down the lake and the wind let up a little and the fishing improved. I decided to try a new bait and tied on the Dark Sleeper, within a few cast I had 2 fish on it,  stuck with it for the next couple hrs landing at least 5 fish and losing a few more along with a few Dark Sleepers. Tom did well with his Menace and wacky rigged Senko.  The wind again started to freshen to at least 20 and we called it a day at 2PM.  Our total for the day was probably around 25 fish with Tom's earlier 3.5LM being the biggest.  Water temp was 68.  Bulk of our fish came on the Zoom Ol Monster worm, Dark Sleeper, & Wacky rigs.

Hoping to get out with the new rig on Fri for a few hrs, with Quabbin in the pic for nex wk.

My son had a tournament last weekend starting on Friday, so I took Friday off and hit Houghton's pond in the morning for my first fish since my outing just after ice out. Got 4 with the biggest at 2 lbs. All were on a Swim Senko t-rigged with a 3/16 oz bullet weight (brass). nothing hit the Rippin Rap or a spinnerbait.

Felt good to get out and get the juices flowing again.

Quabbin last Friday (5/31). My PB smallie (3.52) on a body of water that has given me fits in the past. Surf fishing for Stripers this week and back on the kayak for LMB this weekend!

I'd be curious as to how you do on the stripers, I'm looking to fish them in the next couple of weeks.

I was out on the CT river a couple weekends ago and they were scarce but definitely starting their run. We got a few in the 20-25" range and I got the biggest at 31".

That's good news. I'll be up in Maine, so hopefully they'll be there when I land.

Thanks for the reports fellas.

One of my favorite times to fish for bass is when bluegill spawn. Saw some beds last Sunday and hope to take advantage of this period tomorrow.

Good luck to those who are on the water or have plans this weekend to be on the water.

Nice dude! Ive been getting them off my backyard, water is finally clear. The tide hasn’t been good tho. Need water in the marsh for the strippers to come in! At low tide there’s no water.

Been seeing some bigger fish following my plugs! But haven’t been committing.  The tide is high when the sun is high! High tide at dusk is the best time to fish!

Fishing Rhino and I fished Sawdy Pond yesterday morning, launching just after 0500.  Weather conditions were perfect with mostly sunny conditions, a slight breeze, and water temps in the low 70's.  I mixed it up between treble hooks and soft baits and got a mix of pickerel, LMB, SMB, white perch, yellow perch, and crappie.  My big fish was a pickerel just under three pounds.

Tom got big fish of the day with at least one Larry above three pounds.

Spent the afternoon at Little Pond with the family and our neighbor’s dog, Smooch.  The girls didn’t fish, but I HAD to.  Water temps were 73.x, BP 30.4, with just a slight breeze from the S/SE.

I caught 4 plus sized dink Larries on a wacky rigged black/blue laminate Yum Dinger and 3/8 oz. bluegill jig.

We discovered Smooch doesn’t like kayaks or water.

You do know it's illegal to keep cod in Ma. unless your below Cape Cod.  You can keep all the strippers you want (lol) but stripers are one per person over 28"??

Derby Report and Cape (Fresh/Salt) Update:

Saturday: Fished a team tourney on The 'Nip, 75 degrees, slight wind and sunny w/ bluebird skies. Water temps were 74-76 and fish were in a bit of a post-spawn funk. Lots of fry and mostly non-keeper males fry-guarding up shallow; caught maybe 12-13 fish, but only 7 or 8 keepers. Partner dumped a 5lber right at the boat, maybe an arms-length from my outstretched net, which was a total heart-breaker. Our keeper bites mostly came flipping swim-jigs around isolated hydrilla clumps out offshore. Ended up in the top 1/3rd of the field with ~9lbs, so not a total disaster, but the big one would've made a difference as the winners had ~13.5lbs.

Sunday AM: My buddy and I got out early for some redemption on Cliffs in Nickerson state park. Amazingly, waters temps were still in the upper-60s (67-68) and it showed; the small population of large-mouths were up shallow and still on beds, so we initially focused on the small isolated pockets of reeds/emergent pad stems. With clarity >10ft, it was very cool to sight-cast hair jigs and drop-shots for cruisers and locked fish from 30-40ft away. We ended up both catching a couple of 3lbers, which made up for Saturday's misfires. We also picked up a few nice smallies on finesse swim-baits and tubes in 8-12ft on rocky spots.

Sunday PM: Got out on the salt for a few hours before sunset in Stage Harbor in the whaler and got my first keeper striper of the year. Better late than never I guess. Got 4 fish between 22-29" on a Sebile magic swimmer glide-bait just at the channel entrance. Go Bs!

Got out Saturday for a bit and got a couple at Houghton's Pond. They were in lily pads and at the second weed line.

Was having trouble getting a t-rig down in the pads, so I went home and made these up:

I hope to try these out later in the week.

The stripper population of the cape has dwindled recently with the closing of Zachary's. I bet you can still find one or two but they won't be in any abundance like they were in years past.

Hey y’all, my buddy and I are going on our first smallie mission to the Quabbin tomorrow. Interested to see how it pans out with the rain coming in tonight. We are renting a boat out of gate 43, think we will have any issues securing a boat on a rainy Tuesday? How early should we get there? And any other tips on how to get on decent smalljaws would be greatly appreciated. Planning on starting the day rigged with a dropshot, a jig, and a popper. We also don’t have sonar.

Oh yea! I’m well aware that cod is a no go! And strippers are 28 inches hahaha! I mean stripers.  I keep up with the regulations!

We were just messing around seeing what bites my hook! I don’t usually keep fish!

Gates open at 6am, you'll have no problem renting a boat and motor on a wkday.  If I were you I'd try to use some kind of anchor, if it's windy you'll be blowing all over.  Or you could use the wind to your advantage if it's not too windy.  A map with contours would be to your advantage.

Appreciate the response! Supposed to get pretty gusty after the rain stops tomorrow so will definitely look into the anchor situation.

Anyone fish South Watuppa lately? Wondering if its worth the 1-1.25hr drive from the East Cape this time of year?
