Super User DogBone_384 Posted April 20, 2019 Super User Posted April 20, 2019 Good luck to you guys tourney fishing down the Cape this weekend! Â The beach in Dennis Port looks pretty rough. Quote
LadiMopar Posted April 20, 2019 Posted April 20, 2019 Hi guys! Hope everyone has a great weekend no matter what you're doing.  I'm not fishing this weekend but was out doing a little organizing of the new yak, trying to get ready for my first tournament next Saturday. After coming in the house I started spooling the two new reels I bought (the newest Daiwa Tatula 100 H and HS) and much to my surprise I discovered I had company on the inner part of my elbow....the first tick of the season. So just a friendly reminder to keep your eyes peeled, and keep yourself safe from these little menaces. Trust me when I say an ounce of prevention is truly better than suffering through the cure!  Now it's time to go study the maps for next Saturday....?  Quote

Dunks N Dinks Posted April 22, 2019 Posted April 22, 2019 Derby Report: Green Egg & Hams  Happy Easter folks. Hope everyone's fam is good. 2nd derby of the year (for me), the Easter Bunny Open, saw a bit of a curve-ball from mother-nature down in Harwich on Saturday (transitioning from 58f air and cloudy/drizzle 12mph S to 68f air and partly sunny w/ gusts up to 30mph SW in the afternoon). Water temps were variable, 49.5 to 52.5 degrees in parts. 26 teams showed up for the open tourney, making Long Pond a bit crowded in the process (only 750 acres), but everyone launched and the lures began to fly at 7:45am without any issue. My partner and I drew boat #5, and took a short bunny-hop across the lake to a Southern Wind-facing main-lake point, setting up shop for what would prove to be a pretty stingy day on the lake. Our game-plan was pretty simple; focus on the deep finesse smallie pattern that I had developed two weeks ago pre-fishing (small swim-bait and drop-shot), and then keep the shallow pre-spawn large-mouth bite honest in the afternoon. We ended up dredging up two solid 3lber's within the first hour in 30ft on the swim-bait, which proved to be a bit of a blessing in disguise, as we went 0-fer for the next 4.5hrs, prompting quite a bit of frustration in the process. We unsuccessfully gambled on a shallow jerkbait pattern, then tried pitching ned rigs around docks in the Western-end...but with 1.5hrs to go, we still had ~6lbs in the 'well.  At last, we decided to go back to our original deep-water access point to finish out the session, and that ended up making all the difference. Our last and final two bites were both high-caliber; I cracked a 4.12 and 4.62 before the whistle blew. Without a limit and with no clue how everyone else did that day, we had the nagging feeling we had come in a dollar and few pounds short of victory. All said and done however, it turned out the front had made a mess of most prevailing patterns, with the shallow bite proving tough despite the warming water trend. With our 4-fish limit of 15.05lbs, we managed to squeak out the win with a little bit of home-field-advantage going a long way.           7 Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted April 22, 2019 Posted April 22, 2019 Didn’t get out much this weekend! Bruins game Friday! Did some fishing Saturday after I got back from Boston. My swimbait got DESTROYED!  Fish hit with force! Set hook nothing! Felt no fish! IDK what happened!  I did manage a 3.5er on a smash tech weedless shad!  Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted April 22, 2019 Super User Posted April 22, 2019 Got out yesterday in the afternoon after Easter brunch. Water temps were in the low 60's up shallow....GAME ON! Tried fishing near a deeper channel that has produced good fish in the past and runs up against shallow sandy flats. My dad was trying out some new jerkbaits and got on a pretty good bite, with a few 2lbers in the channel. I got a few decent fish on a jig but no real size. In hindsight I was switching reaction baits too much and it definitely cost me some fish, should have stuck with a jerkbait as well but I don't have as much confidence in them yet. I was confident in the area we were fishing but the wind was blowing straight down the entire length of the lake like a wind tunnel and was making things really difficult. We decided to move shallow into a know spawning cove.  Should have started there! Right of the bat I could see some quality fish cruising around. I stuck with the jig and a swimbait but no takers. We saw a HUGE commotion in the shallows. I just wanted to get a look at the fish but my dad cast his jerkbait to where the flat dropped from like 2ft to 3-4ft and got CRUSHED by what I assumed was the fish that made the splash. She was FAT and I thought it was at least 5 just by the look of it but she didn't quite have the length (19") so it ended up being 4.5lbs. I did manage a smaller fish on the jig but we couldn't manage any more fish out of the cove. I did see a HUGE fish on our way out of the cove though, had to have been nearing 6lbs.  The southern section of the lake has a nice sandy flat too so we ended the day there. It was a good 5 degrees colder down at that end and they weren't ready to spawn though. 2 Quote
Kosmosis Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 Looking for someone experienced to fish with this spring and summer time. I own an 18 foot Ranger. Mainly fish Long Pond (Lakeville), but am open to trying new places. I'm located on the Cape. Quote

markvan Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 Finally broke my skunk streak!  Hit the Nip for 4hrs the weekend before last, with nothing to show for it but a dink pick on a senko. Got skunked at Field Pond the weekend before that. Had a couple skunk nights on the charles throwing jerkbaits, spinners, senkos in between.  But tonight I landed two 17-inchers on the charles, both on a blue-black jig. Surface temps 58-60 per sailing pavilion weather station.  Been seeing herring around the museum of science and in shallow areas near the Longfellow for the last 3-4 days.  It’s on! 5 Quote

Super User MassYak85 Posted April 25, 2019 Super User Posted April 25, 2019 Today is beautiful, I hope some you guys are able to get out! Looks like a bit of a cold stretch ahead for the next week, might set things back. I know fish around my area were just starting to get in the mood up shallow with the water temps touching 60. You guys think some cold rain will push them back off to pre-spawn locations? Quote
JG233 Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 Ohio fishing is terrible. My fav lake is down many feet and unfishable. I can't wait to be back in New England next week: the Q and Cape Lakes call to me! Quote

KenP Posted April 26, 2019 Posted April 26, 2019 I took a break from tossing the big swimbaits and hooked into a 6.5 largie on a custom jig I made. Just after dinner time last night at the Wachusett Res.   6 Quote
Janderson45 Posted April 26, 2019 Posted April 26, 2019 Seen a lot of big bass coming out of the Wachusett past two weeks!  Maybe I’ll find a place to go drop the Lund in and get in on this action sometime soon. Quote

Besides that if you do just focus on the breaks to deeper water for smallies. For Largies focus near the thomas basin up to stillwater river. They are moving into shallows on sunny days for the warmth.  Some guys were hammering them early in the morning on the shallow rocky flats in less than 2 ft of water. Im guessing they were out near the break since they were tossing 1oz jigs with small keitech easy shiners and dragging it back over the rocks. Edited April 29, 2019 by KenP 1 Quote

Super User DogBone_384 Posted April 26, 2019 Super User Posted April 26, 2019 Dropped by my nemesis for a couple hours yesterday,Great South, in Plymouth.  Because I was short on time I worked my way up the windward (?) shore along a steep drop off betting the bait fish were there. I kept it simple, tossing a wacky rigged perch Senko, a couple red square bills/crank baits, and a watermelon/red flake tube.   I caught two sallies, 1-11 and 1-0, on a bright red Cotton Cordell rattlin' shad.   I got the idea to use a red lure from bassresource's YouTube channel. One of their videos suggested bright red when the water temps reach 50. They're on to something because this little red rattlin' shad's been the only lure that's worked well for me the last three outings to Plymouth....  The weather was great, as others' mentioned. Great South's water temp was 56.x - 57.x, the BP 30.0, and there was a moderate breeze from the east.  I saw my first minnows of the season along the northern shore and one LMB cruising the canal between Big and Little South.  There were a lot of beds in the shallow areas, which I assume are Suckers, just like I saw last week at Hedges. JAB50 Posted April 27, 2019 Posted April 27, 2019 If anyone fishes Cape Cod this weekend into next week, could please give me a report. I'll be heading there next Friday, May 3rd through the 11th. You can Pm me if you want. I usually fish in yarmouth,Dennis, harwich and brewster. I'll have my 12' jackson Liska and a 12' aluminum V-hull. Last year this time, the smallies were on beds. I come every year this same week. And every year it's a different fishing pattern. Hopefully, it's still a hot prespawn bite Quote
