Can get him a 5lb smallie @ Quabbin.

Yeah, you could.  But, could you get him a double header like you did for me?

Still have the picture of that and those were both good sized smallies.

Last yr on the Q I found the fishing for smallies to be tougher than usual. I had no fish over 5lb for the first time in a long time.  We did have a number over 4.  My PB is right at 6lbs, but I've had smallies follow baits that were bigger than that.

Anybody still fishing open water? Most places near me have about 2" of ice so I'll be fishing hard-water for the next few months (hopefully).

Plymouth & Cape Cod should still be open.  Kettle & deep waters won't freeze... yet.  I know Long Pond in Plymouth takes a L O N G time to freeze.  It's 100+' deep not far from the boat launch.

I cant decided where to fish this weekend, I could fish a honey hole  hoping for a giant or  fish water I dont fish often but has good fish.

Start farthest from home so if it doesn't pan out you can hit another OTW home.

Hey guys, sorry if this question has been asked, but any kayak fishers on this thread? For a couple of years now I've really wanted to fish out of a yak.

I'm thinking a stand up one, any thoughts/comments? Good or bad. Would love to know what you think.

I fish out of a yak. It’s not bad and it gets you to the fish but I am probably going to be moving towards a Jon boat. I’m sure the experience gets better the more you spend but I can’t justify spending thousands on a kayak when I could just get a Jon boat with a trailer.

I fish out of one. It'a a 10' sit-in so definitely not your traditional fishing kayak but it gets the job done. IMO only bad thing about a kayak is the wind, it can control how you fish for the day, or stop you altogether. Other than that there aren't really any lakes in the state (that you can launch on) that are big enough you couldn't paddle the whole length, plus you get the ability to go ultra shallow.

Stand-up you are looking at a sit-on-top, probably 12'+. There are great options out there in that category but many are $1000 or more. Ascend FS12 Sit-On-Top is the cheapest kayak I am aware of in that category at $650. Also consider the weight, most fishing kayaks are 75+lbs, just something to keep in mind for transportation. Also, you may want to strongly consider pedal drive of some sort. More expensive but it makes battling the wind or going long distances easier. If I ever upgrade I'm going pedal drive.

i fish out of a 10 foot super light kayak, but like it was said in a previous post, the wind blows.  Its really great for pond hoping and fishing smaller ponds. I hate fishing a big pond on a kayak. I'm in the process of buying a jon boat, that way i can have a motor, anchor, multiple rods. I hate being limited to only 2 rods!

A perfect day for winter bass.  I’m at work, so best of luck to those that get out today!

Thursday’s weather looks good and I’m off.  Might just head to Plymouth or Cape Cod to try my luck.

Christmas came early this year, I just had to be my own Santa Claus.

Should be a fun winter project, these new models come with heavy duty hyrdrualic hoses and necessary components for a very clean (and lightweight) install - should be very slick looking on the Lund.  Paired with the Ultrex I shouldn’t have a problem preceisly controlling the boat in just about any water depth or conditions.

Yes, I fish out of a Lure 11.5 w/overdrive.

I started with an Ascend 128T and upgraded after a couple years on the water.

If you’re planning on a ‘fishing only’ vessel, a SOT is the way to go.

There are many great brands out there.  Make a list of what features you want and try to see them in person.

If you can travel to the South Shore/Cape, Go Bananas and Bananas are two stores that carry all the major brands.  Their website is: http://bananasinc.com/gbs/  I’ve been to both stores.  Their Wareham store has the better kayak display.

There’s also Billington Sea Kayak in Plymouth, located on Billington Sea.  Doug Gray is the owner.  He encourages paddling before buying.  I bought my first FeelFree kayak from him.  Top notch customer service and a really nice guy.

Best of luck deciding on your ‘yak.

never got out this weekend =(.  Ended up putting a water heater in, Sunday was crappy so football it is.  Thats the last chance I've got for a few weeks to fish, NH this weekend, a wedding the weekend after.  At least I'll be having fun on the weekends.

I would be fantastic if the sun would stay out a little longer so I can fish after work.

I fished out of a kayak for a few years before buying an aluminum bass boat this past spring, can’t recommend it enough for guys that aren’t willing or aren’t able to purchase a motor boat to fish out of.

My kayak is a Wilderness Systems Ride 115x - pretty standard sit on top fishing kayak but better built than most of the cheaper boats and with a few nice accessories and easy mounting solutions. The kayak is incredibly stable, I tried pretty hard to roll or capsize it numerous times and haven’t been able to.  It’s so wide across the cockpit and has a pontoon style hull that makes it stupid stable.  I’ve fallen off of it once in shallow water (my fault) and like many others my experience with this kayak is that you will fall/slide off of the kayak before it’ll actually roll or capsize.

I fish standing up almost 100% of the time while using my kayak, that’s why I bought it.  I had been fishing in a canoe previously, but not being able to comfortably stand and fish was a deal breaker for me, it feels very awkward to sit and fish if you ask me, I like knowing that I’m in a good position to set the hook or feel a bite at all times.  The kayak is also much better for solo fishing trips, it’s lighter and smaller making it much easier to throw on a roof rack and get out there.

Most of the water bodies scattered around Massachusetts are on the smaller side, and as long as you’re not out on one of the larger lakes on a very windy day a kayak can get the job done.  The most frustrating parts of kayak fishing are boat control and battling the wind.  There’s good products and solutions that exist to help combat these issues, but obviously they have their limitations still.

I’m torn between selling mine (will take a pretty big hit compared to what I’ve invested on it) or keeping it for an occasional pond outting when I don’t want to or can’t use the big boat.

I took the racks off my car but looking at Friday and Saturday's weather I might have to put them back on for one more outing. I was hoping to get on some ice this weekend....but I'll take a 50 degree open water day in December.
