Super User DogBone_384 Posted February 21, 2019 Super User Posted February 21, 2019 Since I found Plymouth open on Sunday I assumed (!?) it'd be open today when I got out of work. That wasn't the case: Hedges is 75% locked up with dull gray ice. Bloody pond is 30% locked up and the public access road didn't look good, even for my pickup. Boot pond is 50% locked up. Great South is mostly open but the canal between it and Little South is solid white ice. Little Pond is 90% open. It holds trout and largemouth bass. It's fished heavily. I launched at Little South since I packed up my kayak and drove all the way to Plymouth. I broke about 50' of gray, 1" thick ice to get to open water. I threw a gold Binsky blade bait, a brown/purple tube, and a bass colored NED. I didn't mark much and didn't catch anything. Water temps were 38.x. I caught just a couple dink smallies and a brown pickerel the few times I fished Little South. You must cross it to get to Great South. With some luck and warm weather, most of these ponds will be open for Saturday. 1 Quote

Hedges was too iced over to launch/fish so I took off further south, launching at Snake Pond in Sandwich around 11:00. About half the pond had a skim coat of ice on it which I easily paddled through. Today was my first trip here. It's a good looking pond, about 30 acres. I found zero structure and and average depth of around 25', and just over 50' at its deepest. I threw a gold Binsky, Goby colored tube, a couple Senkos, a green/blue lipless, a purple/orange hair jig, and an orange/black Rapala shad rap deep and came up empty after 5 hours. I covered most of the pond and marked little or nothing on the bottom. 90% of the ice was gone when I left. Water temps were 37.x - 38.x. It's a bummer getting skunked, but it's winter and the water's COLD. I made some mental notes and will get my revenge when it warms up. I checked Hedges and Bloody Pond on the way back. Hedges was still skimmed over, but if it stays above freezing another day it'll be open. Bloody Pond is mostly open, but if you want to drop a kayak in it, be prepared to travel about 3/4 a mile over a widened mountain bike single track trail Plymouth calls Bog Hill Road (https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2016/08/qd/dfwbloo.pdf). All the property prior to Bloody's public access is posted PRIVATE, NO TRESPASSING. My Overdrive Lure weighs about 90 pounds rigged. Not a chance..... Quote

It's been a slow winter for me...I have one bass through the ice compared with maybe 15 pickerel ?.... I'm also looking for some revenge come spring @DogBone_384. Do you have one of those kayak "carts"? Mine is pretty light but if I had a heavier one I'd definitely look at one for places with poor parking near the ramp. Hopefully only a few more weeks until some of the lakes around me open up. This week looks cold so I'll be on the ice at least one or two more weekends. Quote

My Lure also has a wheel in the keel, but it's really only good for short distances across hard packed surfaces. If you're thinking of Bloody Pond, my Lure's just too heavy for that terrain. Dunks N Dinks Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 Scouted out a few Cape Ponds on Saturday.... - Long Pond is completely clear, water is 38-degrees, dropped a blade-bait on a few of my favorite spots for 2.5hrs, hauled water - Sheeps is 70% iced over, launch area locked in - Scargo is 30% iced, managed to launch and tooled around for 2hrs, threw a suspending jerk-bait and soaked a ned rig around some rocks in 28-32ft...nada...water was 36-37-degrees - Seymour is 80% iced, cartop launch was locked in - Hinckleys looked clear from the road, similar temps I imagine Spent the rest of the weekend mounting a side-imaging transducer and re-wiring a new imaging unit for the console...just a few more warm weeks and it'll be go time 2 Quote

Went to bass pro saturday after work, Stocking up for my steelhead trip in a few weeks, as well as a few other trips I have planned this year. CAN'T WAIT!!!! Quote

Hopefully water temps will get, at the least, into the higher 40's by then. My records from '17 & '18 tell the shallower ponds were in the high 40's, warming more quickly than the kettles I fish. Hooked into a big smallie on Sunday and caught a rainbow trout yesterday. Both on a yellow perch painted blitz blade bait 1/2 oz. I’ve been out as much as possible lately. My fiancée and I went shore fishing on Valentine’s Day and she caught a nice largie on a modified hula stick; drop shot 1/4 oz 8in leader Quote

I was able to get a guide for my last day and was only able to get in a very productive 2 hours. 10 Fish landed, nothing huge but the action was great. I had an additional 3 come unbuttoned and had 3 more nail my bait right at the boat while I was reeling in. The 10 fish I landed were about 3.5 lbs and down. No scale, best guess between the guide and I. All but 1 fish was caught on and around a hump - 6 ft to 22 ft - no particular location, up, down, middle. 9 were caught on a 5” swimming senko, t-rigged w/ 3/16 oz bullet weight and one on a fluke t-rigged weightless. Color didnt matter, I used white, black, watermelon, pumpkin and a motor oil color. I’m not sure what Yamamoto actually refers them as, I’m just getting back into the fishing game. My guide caught 4 using a lipless crank, a lipped crank and t-rigged worms. Again, color didn’t matter. I just picked up my license and hopefully will be getting some open water soon. This weekend it looks like snow removal will be on the menu. 1 Quote

No, I don't fish there much because it's so pressured. The few times I have, nothing bigger than a couple pounds liked my offerings. I consider Ponkie my home pond, which is only 20 minutes from home. I also prefer fishing from the kayak now that the wife works full time and our daughter's in college. Ponkie's slow to open up too. That's why I don't add up the gas receipts to Plymouth with a Toyota Tundra. On a side note, I took my 4-11 PB LMB out of Blue Hills Res just after ice out in 2016. I'll make a point of scouting the local ponds in the next few days to see how thick the ice is/isn't. Good luck if you get out somewhere. Quote
